Summary POINTS FOR DISCUSSION Introduction Nutrition in Animals Different Ways of Taking Food Digestion in Human Q & A

Have you ever thought that why do we need food? Ans. All organisms including humans require food for growth, repair and functioning of the body. How do plants and animals get their food? Ans. Plants can prepare their own food by photosynthesis whereas animals are dependent upon plants and other animals for their nutrient requirements.. 1 NUTRITION IN ANIMALS

2 Various components of food are: Carbohydrates Proteins Fats Vitamins Minerals The components of food are complex substances which cannot be utilized directly. So first they are broken down into simpler substances. The breakdown of complex components of food into simpler substances is called digestion. NUTRITION IN ANIMALS

Objectives 3 Practice Problem Q. Which among the following is the simplest component of food? Curd Amino acids Proteins Carbohydrates A B C D

Objectives 4 Practice Problem Q. The food is not required for: Repair Development Growth Air purification A B C D

5 DIFFERENT WAYS OF TAKING FOOD How can different types of animal take their food? Gnawing Lapping Swallowing

6 DIFFERENT WAYS OF TAKING FOOD Scraping Sucking Chewing Capturing and Swallowing Chewing

8 DIFFERENT WAYS OF TAKING FOOD

Objectives 9 Practice Problem Q. By which way do butterflies take their food from flowers? Swallowing Sucking Scrapping Chewing A B C D

Objectives 10 Practice Problem Q. The organism which gets its food by scraping is: Eagle Cow Rabbit Ant A B C D

11 Animals like squirrels, rabbits and rats feed on hard grains and nuts. They bite these hard nuts with very sharp front cutting teeth. This is called Gnawing . Animals like snakes do not have chewing teeth, they do not chew their food instead they swallow their food whole. Animals like frogs have a long sticky tongue to catch its prey. When a frog spots an insect, it sticks out its tongue and catches its prey. Then it rolls back its tongue back into its mouth and swallow the pray. Insects like bees and butterflies have a long tube to suck nectar from plants. DIFFERENT WAYS OF TAKING FOOD

12 Animals like cows and buffaloes have a special way of eating their food, they first swallow their food whole and fill their stomach, later they bring it back into their mouth and keep chewing it for hours. This is known as chewing the cud. Dogs and cats use their tongue to lap up their food. There are some animals like  giraffe  that use their long necks and the elephant that uses it trunk to intake the food. DIFFERENT WAYS OF TAKING FOOD

13 DIFFERENT WAYS OF TAKING FOOD Starfish feeds on hard shells containing animals. These animals contain shell of calcium carbonate. Fist Starfish opens the shell then pops out its stomach through its mouth to eat the soft animal inside the shell. Finally the stomach then goes back into the body and the food is slowly digested.

Objectives 14 Practice Problem Q. Gnawing is present in: Eagles Cows Rabbit Dogs A B C D

Objectives 15 Practice Problem Q. The organisms which gets their food by chewing are: Insects Cows Rabbits Buffaloes A B C D

Objectives 16 Practice Problem Q. The food of starfish is: Insects Hard shell containing animals Aquatic plants Ants A B C D

17 DIGESTION IN HUMANS Humans are holozoic in nature. We take our food as solid or liquid through mouth then we bite it into small pieces. Then digestion of food take place.

Objectives 18 Practice Problem Q. Animals which take intact whole food inside their mouth are called: Holozoic Autotrophs Heterotrophs Saprophytes A B C D

Objectives 16 Practice Problem Q. The mode of feeding present in human is Scrapping Gnawing Chewing Ingestion A B C D

Objectives 16 Practice Problem Q. The mode of feeding present in eagle is: Swallowing Capturing Both a and c Licking A B C D

19 SUMMARY Animals are heterotrophic in nature and can not synthesize their own food. Food is required for growth, repair and functioning of body. There are different modes of feeding present in different animals. Food is a complex material and needs to be digested.
