Nutritional Supplements SIDDHANT SINGH 103

SPECIFIC LEARNING OBJECTIVES MENTION NUTRIONAL SUPPLEMENTS EXPLAIN THE USES AND ADVERSE EFFECTS OF COENZYME Q10, GLUCOSAMINE AND MELATONIN.

NUTRIONAL SUPPLEMENTS INCLUDE Nutritional supplements play an important role in pharmacology, particularly in terms of enhancing health, preventing deficiencies, and supporting the treatment of various conditions. Here’s an overview of their significance: Types of Nutritional Supplements Vitamins : Essential for various metabolic processes. For example: Vitamin D : Supports bone health and immune function. Vitamin B12 : Crucial for nerve function and red blood cell formation. Minerals : Involved in numerous biochemical processes. Calcium : Important for bone density. Iron : Necessary for hemoglobin production.

CONT. Fatty Acids : Such as omega-3s, beneficial for cardiovascular health and inflammation. Amino Acids : Building blocks of proteins that can support muscle repair and metabolism. Herbal Supplements : Used for their potential therapeutic effects.

COENZYME Q10 Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), also known as ubiquinone , is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like molecule naturally present in every cellular membrane within our body. CoQ10 is crucial for efficiently transferring electrons within the mitochondrial oxidative respiratory chain and producing ATP.

MECHANISM OF ACTION CoQ10 can potentially increase the production of vital antioxidants, such as superoxide dismutase, an enzyme that effectively mitigates vascular oxidative stress in individuals with hypertension.  In addition, CoQ10 lowers lipid peroxidation levels by diminishing pro-oxidative compounds.

USES Supplementation with CoQ10, in addition to standard therapy in patients with moderate-to-severe heart failure, is associated with symptom reduction and reduction of major adverse cardiovascular events. CoQ10 supplementation in healthy older patients and older patients with diabetes, hypertension, and ischemic heart disease may decrease cardiovascular mortality risk. CoQ10 has also shown promise in migraine prophylaxis. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia : CoQ10 may help improve energy levels and reduce symptoms in individuals with these conditions.

ADVERSE EFFECTS Gastrointestinal Issues : Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and stomach upset. Allergic Reactions : Rarely, some individuals may develop rashes or itching. Headaches : Some users report headaches, potentially linked to changes in blood pressure.

GLUCOSAMINE Glucosamine is found naturally in your body. It plays an important role in making glycosaminoglycans and glycoproteins, which are essential building blocks of many parts of your joints, including ligaments, tendons, cartilage and synovial fluid. Glucosamine is available in oral supplements as glucosamine sulfate , glucosamine hydrochloride, and n-acetyl glucosamine.

USES Glucosamine as a nutritional supplement is used in:
1. osteoarthritis
2. glaucoma
3. weight loss
4. jaw pain
5. joint pain
6. back pain
7. interstitial cystitis, a bladder condition
8. multiple sclerosis (MS)
9. HIV 11. AIDS

ADVERSE EFFECTS Glucosamine has no serious adverse effects, but possible complications include:

1. Epigastric pain
2. Heartburn
3. Diarrhoea
4. Nausea

MELATONIN Melatonin is the main hormone secreted by the pineal gland. Melatonin is present but can also be synthesized in the enterochromaffin cells Melatonin in human breast milk follows a circadian rhythm in both preterm and term. It helps with the timing of your circadian rhythms (24-hour internal clock) and with sleep. Darkness triggers the body to make more melatonin, which signals the body to sleep.

USES Trouble falling asleep at a conventional bedtime. Sleep disturbance caused by certain blood pressure medicine. Cancer. Taking high doses of melatonin by mouth or as a shot, administered by a healthcare provider along with chemotherapy or other cancer treatments, might reduce tumor size and improve survival rates in some people with cancer. Confusion and agitation after surgery. Insomnia

ADVERSE EFFECTS Melatonin is relatively nontoxic, although some mild adverse effects have been reported with higher doses and extended-release formulations, including drowsiness, daytime sedation, nausea, and headaches.
