History of nylon 6 In 1938 Paul Schlack of the IG Farben Company in Germany polymerized Caprolactum & created a different form of the polymer identified as Nylon 6. It’s a homopolymer which is formed by ring opening polymerisation .
IUPAC NAME polyhexano-6-lactum S tructure :- Other names : - P olycaprolactum , perlon , PA6 , capron,nylatron
properties It has high tensile strength They are tough Has well elasticity and lustre Resistant to abrasion and chemicals such as acids & alkalies Tg value 47 °C.
Applications Used as thread in bristles for tooth brushes As gears ,fittings & bearings, automotive industry Threads, ropes, filaments , nets Gun frames Surgical sutures, strings for musical instruments In hosiery and knitted garments
Biodegradation Flavobacterium and Pseudomonas degrade oligomers of Nylon 6, but not polymers. Certain white rot fungal strains can also degrade Nylon 6 through oxidation.
