SUB: MIDWIFERY AND OBSTETRICAL NURSING TOPIC : TRUE AND FA L SE LABOUR EVALUATED By: MS. JUHI LABANA PRESENTEd BY: PATEL RECHAL

INTRODUCTION A physiological process which starts when the mother begins to feel regular, painfull, rhythmical contraction of the uterus ( muscles of the womb tighten and relax)

Cont.. These contractions cause the cervix (neck of the womb) to dilate(open) and efface (shorten) The baby is born and the placenta (afterbirth) and membranes (bag around the fetus) are completely expelled out of the body. On average, labour lasts 12-20 hours.second and subsequent labour are much faster.

DEFINITION Labour Series of events that takes place in the genital organ in an effort to expel the viable products of conception out of the womb through the vagina in the outer world is called labour.

Cont... True Labour Contraction come at regular intervals and get closer together as time goes on ( contraction last about 30 to 70 second) False labour Contraction are often irregular and do not get closer together.

NORMAL LABOUR

Cont... Labour is called normal if it fulfills the following criteria. 🔹 Spontaneous in onset and at term 🔹 With vertex presentation 🔹 Without undue prolongation

Cont... 🔹Natural termination with minimal aids 🔹Without having any complications affecting the health of mother and baby

STAGES OF LABOUR First stage of Labour Second stage of Labour Third stage of Labour Fourth stage of Labour

First stage of Labour This starts from the onset of true Labour pain to complete dilatation of the cervix Its average duration is 12 hours in primigravida and 6 hours in multigravida

Second stage of Labour It starts from the full dilation of the cervix and with expulsion of fetus from the birth canal. Average duration is 2 hours in primigravida and 1 hours in multigravida

Cont..

Third stage of Labour Expulsion of plecenta and it’s membrane The average duration of third stage of Labour was 15 minutes

Fourth stage of Labour It is the stage of observation for at least 1hour after expulsion of the afterbirths. During this period maternal vitals and any vaginal bleeding are monitored.

TRUE AND FALSE LABOUR

TRUE LABOUR Contraction come at regular intervals and will begin to build up over time Contraction will continue despite changes in activity or position Felt in the lower back and radiates to the abdomen

Mucusy discharge with small to moderate amounts of blood Waters may break and the amniotic fluid has no odor Increasing discomfort Cervix softens, shorters and dilates

FALSE LABOUR Contractions are irregular , unvarying in frequency and duration. Contractions may be responsive to change in activity or position Felt in abdomen, around or above the naval Can produce some vaginal discharge, brownish in color instead of blood- tinged.

Water will not break Discomfort remains the same No changes to the cervix

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TRUE AND FALSE LABOUR True Labour Uterine contraction Always present Not exceed > 90 seconds Regular and rhythmic Pain will not stop with comfort measures May have back ache False labour Not always present Lasts for 3 to 4 minutes Irregular Can stop with comfort measures No back ache

Cont.. True Labour Cervix Shortening Dilatation Fetus Head engagement False labour No shortness, soft No dilatation No head engagement

MANAGEMENT OF FALSE LABOUR Drink water Take a walk false labour Contraction often stop when you change position or get up and move If you’ve been active, take a nap or rest Relax by taking a warm bath or listening to music Get a massage

Assignment Define the labour. [ 2 marks] Difference between true and false labour. [ 4 Marks] Explain the stages of Labour. [ 4 Marks]
