Introduction Planning is the first step of management process and continuous intellectual process of determining philosophy, objectives, policies, procedures, programmes and rules. It includes various activities to achieve the future target.

A hierarchical model of planning

Mission: Definition “MISSION”- Latin word- Missio i.e. act of sending A mission statement is formal, short, written statement of the purpose of organization. It helps the organization to link its activities to the need of society and legitimize its existence. Mission is highest level description of why the organization exists and what aims to be achieve. Mission identifies the basic function of an organization/ agency.

Purpose of mission: Defines fundamental purpose of an organization. It is used to set out model of organization in future. Give answer of question: what is to be done? What are the problems/need of our organization? What makes your organization unique? Who are the beneficiaries of your work?

Elements of mission statement: Purpose statement : clearly stated in term of goals. Define purpose in term of outcomes rather than methods. 2. Activity/statement: activity to be clearly known to accomplish the objectives. 3. Values: values are the beliefs that a organization hold in common and put them into practice. Values guide organizational members in performing work.

Formulation of mission

Characteristics of mission statements: Short: not more than one/ two sentences. Inspiring : to call people for action Durable : time plan fixed. Distinctive : uniquely describing organizational purposes. Specific : towards goals achievement. Credible : believable Alive : known to everyone Clea r: intensions and words to be known. Feasible : neither too high to achievable, nor too low.

Contd.. Precise and self-explanatory : not too restrict, nor too wide. Unambiguous Written form and known by personnel Dynamic Statement of ethics, principles and standards to be included in mission. Express organization mission and vision. Framework to formulate organizational strategies. Drive an organization forward.

TYPES OF OBJECTIVES

BASED ON HIERARCHY OR OPERATIONAL OBJECTIVES: Primary objectives: The main primary objectives of hospital services are to provide the curative services by ensuring patient care to indoor patients. Subsidiary objectives: These objectives are based on the managerial professional activities e. g. human relation, communication, teaching or research.

EXAMPLE OF OBJECTIVES To provide efficient social life to nurses and thus prepare them in the art of living together. To bring school or college and community closer to each other. To help the nurses in unfolding, blossoming of personality. To enable the nurse to have the right type of philosophy in life. To conserve all the good practices and conventions of the past. To help in the realization of objectives of education as laid down by the experts according to their selected vocation or profession. To bring harmony between and the tasks. To make maximum use of all educational facilities in order to attain the desired objectives and to help minimize the wastage. To provide healthy atmosphere for experimentation and research.
