Observation Lab By Edward Camarena

What stores did I chose? I went to 6 different stores and observed each one of them, each had its distinctiveness and similarities to each other.

Kohl's The first store that I chose to observe was Kohl’s It’s a department store. The only issue was I got there when they opened the store at 9 A.M I was there for over 20 minutes to try to observe the most possible in that time since there was not a lot of customers at that time

Kohl’s Before you enter The store has big Font letters which could be seen from far away The doors you have to manually open Can’t see the inside without going in Products The first thing that I noticed was the school backpacks as you walk in There were also “Sale” and “discount” signs throughout the store It seemed they were targeting back to school students and parents Environment As soon as I walked in I felt the cool temperature There was background music in low volume but still hearable The store seemed very organized and clean Personnel As soon as I walked in I was greeted by employees They were dressed business casual The employees seemed professional Since I was there very early I did not see employees helping customers or contact them after the initial greet it seemed they were doing other tasks and getting ready for the shift Customers Saw only adult customers in the store from young adults to elderly people They were browsing the store and it didn’t seem they were looking for something in particular

OfficeMax The next store I went to was OfficeMax, I wasn’t very pleased at the personnel due to the lack of customer attention I think if I was a customer at that time of the visit I would’ve been disappointed.

OfficeMax Before you enter OfficeMax logo very outstanding It had different signs throughout their windows with ads and sales From the outside it looked very welcoming Automatic doors Environment Before I went in I could hear the music it was at a moderate volume The temperature was nice and cold Very bright inside Personnel I was there for over 15 minutes and an employee never talked to me or even greeted when I walked in the store There were only men working they seemed in their 20’s The employees were talking to each other it seemed they were gossiping since they were laughing noticeably loud I browsed around the store and they never asked if I needed help finding a product Products The first thing I noticed when I walked in was a “Sale” sign on school supplies The store was organized by sections Customers I only saw one man browsing the store It didn’t seem he was looking for anything in particular He left the store seemingly fast in less than 5 minutes without purchasing anything

Dollar Tree The store I went next was Dollar Tree I hadn’t been there in a long time and didn’t know that the items did not cost $1.00 anymore they cost $1.25 now

Dollar Tree Before you enter The big green font is noticeable from far away along with the 1 signs on windows Automatic doors Environment As the doors opened and I entered the store I felt the cold A/C air breeze on my face They had background music The merchandised seemed crowded but organized Personnel The personnel never contacted me They all had uniform They were all busy some were at the registers other were re-stocking Products Walking in the store the first products I see were seasonal products I noticed 4th of July decorating items, summer products such as pool supplies and accessories, and back to school supplies The products are very compacted together, but well organized By the cash registers I saw impulsive products such as candy, and other household accessories Customers I noticed customers from all ages and backgrounds There were elderly women browsing the store Families with little kids were also browsing but it seemed they were more interested in toys I noticed the kids were having the most fun they seemed happy and full of joy

Target The following store I went was Target I had not been there in quite a while and was surprised that I noticed that the store seemed dirty and not as tidy as the last time I went

Target Before you enter The store lettering and font is very distinctive from any other store you could be driving past it and notice Target just by its outer appearance The red automatic doors are welcoming to the customer Environment As I walked the first thing I noticed were the floors they seemed dirty There was no background music in the store Personnel No one greeted me when I walked in Some were wearing Target t-shirts not all The workforce seemed to be young in their 20’s and 30’s The gender was mixed although I saw mostly women employees I saw an employee assisting and elderly woman, she seemed very pleased and satisfied after she got helped Products Walking in I noticed seasonal item Walking throughout the store I saw back to school deals on supplies and clothes for students Customers There were all types of customers ages and genders I noticed families shopping together Some were browsing the store others seemed they were on a mission and only got a few products very quickly and left

Five Below The next store I went to was Five Below

Five Below Before you enter The store logo seemed very unique and distinctive Outside the store they had many summer products that caught customers attention Environment Walking in the store I heard moderate volumed music The store had cool vibes with the background music and the lighting inside Personnel Walking in the store several employees greeted me in very kindly The workforce was very young possibly teens and young adults They were all wearing Five Below t-shirts Employees did ask me as I was browsing around the store if I was looking for something in particular Products The products were priced anywhere from $1-20 The store is very compacted you have to really look around if you are looking for something in particular They had different section with seasonal items Customers The customers were mostly young with the exception of 2 elderly women that were browsing the store together It seemed the customers were not looking for something in particular they were mostly browsing the store

QuikTrip The last business I chose was the gas station and convenience store QuikTrip

QuikTrip Before you enter The unique style and colors of the building are distinctive to a QT store Modern building and it attracts the customer to enter Environment Background music Very cool temperature inside Extremely clean inside Qt is very unique and customer friendly Personnel Very friendly employees I was greeted by several of them I saw employees cleaning the floor and machines with I think is very important because the store was very clean Workforce was very mixed mostly young adults Customers The customers were mostly adults with the exception of a mom with her kids All the customers I saw knew what to get right away some were buying ready food and mostly all of them were getting fountain drinks Some just paid for gas and left Products QT has several convenience products they range from ready to grab food, they have a kitchen which you could order and customize food, grocery products, and more Gas station Alcohol/ Tabacco products
