2. Foreign nationals born abroad
who have Portuguese
relatives can be eligible to
become Portuguese citizens.

3. The law offers the nationality acquisition option to those who have at least one ancestor on the
second degree of the succession line.

4. One can acquire Portuguese nationality by descent if he/she has or had at least one parent or
grandparent who is or was a Portuguese citizen.

5. An important condition is that the parent or
grandparent has not lost his or her Portuguese
citizenship.

6. As part of the application documents,
the foreign national needs to submit
the birth certificates of his or her
Portuguese parent(s) or
grandparent(s).

7. The applicant also needs to provide
proof of sufficient Portuguese
language knowledge via recognised
diplomas or examination certificates.

8. All documents need to be authenticated
and translated into Portuguese if they are
issued in other languages.
