About This Presentation

All about Oganesson

Slide Content

Hi. If you continue to read this , I don’t know If you will be amazed by me or you will just ignore me.

I am not famous as Hydrogen. I am a harmful one. I am only used for research interest only.

My name is Oganesson . My name pronounced as  oh- gan - ess -on . Named after the scientist Yuri Oganessian . I will show you his picture.

I am an element 118. Which means I have 118 proton,118 electron and 176 neutron. My Atomic weight is 294. My melting point, boiling point and density are still unknown.

My Element Classification is   Non-metal. My Period Number is 7. My  Group Number is  18  .My Group Name is Noble Gas

Do you really wanted to know me? Okay, let’s proceed. I was discovered in 2002 by Russian scientists at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna , Russia.

Three years prior, in 1999, the team at the Lawrence Berkeley Labs in California published a paper announcing the discovery of element 118, but their results could not be replicated and the team retracted their paper.

The reaction was a fusion of element 20 with element 98:  calcium-48   with  californium-249 . Calcium ions were formed into a beam in a cyclotron (a particle accelerator) and fired at a target layer of californium oxide deposited on  titanium  foil.

Bombardment lasted 2300 hours, accumulating a total dose of 2.5 x 10 19  calcium ions. Two atoms of oganesson-294, which existed for 2.55 ms and 3.16 ms, were produced in March 2002.

Further experiments and analysis later confirmed this result and the discovery was verified by The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) in 2015.

In October 9, 2006, the element was officially announced by the Dubna team and by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory team, who had been working with the Dubna scientists.

When I was born, I and other 6 elements was accepted by IUPAC ,namely: element 113  ( nihonium ) element 114   ( flerovium )

element 115   ( moscovium ) element 116   ( livermorium ) element 117   ( tennessine ) element 118 ( oganesson ) We completed the seventh row of the periodic table.

Wait.I wanted to show you the Bohr Model of me. It’s really awesome. 118 electrons are lined up.

My model is pretty cool. But my appearance and Characteristics may be the reason for you to dis like me.

I am harmful due to my radioactivity. I am a synthetic radioactive metal and has only been produced in minute amounts. My uses? I am only used for research interest only.

I am partly like myself. But maybe if scientist found a positive and very useful purpose for me i t will truly makes me happy.

Sincerely yours, Oganesson
