God Says: “Love Others, Too” (INTRODUCTION TO THE REMAINING SEVEN COMMANDMENTS)

OBJECTIVES At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to … Discuss how the commandments inter- relate with one another Love one’s neighbors as you love God and yourself Pray for the spiritual & material needs and safety of your neighbors

“You shall love your neighbor as you love yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)

The second group of Commandments from 4 th to 10 th , speak of loving one’s neighbor. The fast-growing changes in technology is undeniably have caused us a lot of differences in the way we understand our world and other people especially in our perspectives about love of neighbor. For some of us today, love may only be an emotion, a passion or just a feeling. These views mislead us to see love as an object of pleasure or fulfilment to our self-centered interest and desires. Despite of these growing changes, let us be reminded of the words of Pope Benedict XVI in his encyclical Deus caritas est : “to love with a will and not just in the feeling level”. Love is grace poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, so as we men and women become instruments of love towards others.

Learner’s Activity BRAINSTORMING ( Romans 13: 8-10) Be under obligation to no one – the only obligation you have is to love one another. Whoever does this has obeyed the Law. The commandments, “Do not commit adultery; do not commit murder; do not steal; do not desire what belongs to someone else” _all these, and any others besides, are summed up in the one command, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” If you love others, you will never do them wrong; to love, then, is to obey the whole Law. – Romans 13: 8-10

Process Questions: What is LOVE?

Why we have to love our neighbor, CCC 2198 will help us discuss the following questions:   Why love your neighbors? And how?   Why? Because Jesus Himself said so. John 13, 34: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus said to his disciples: Love one another as I have loved you.   How? As Jesus had loved us. This means, we follow the ways of Jesus in His attitude, attention or sensitiveness to other people: to their needs and especially to their need for total salvation.

Jesus’ classification of the great commandments (Mark 12: 29-31; Matthew 22:34-40; Luke 10:25-28) You shall love your neighbor as yourself You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all …your strength.

The law of loving one’s neighbor according to St. Paul   He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law: ‘You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet, and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law” (Rom. 13, 8-10).

The Inter- relationships of the Ten Commandments: A. Virtues related to justice: The first 4 Commandments (I, II, III, IV) are practices regarding religion, piety, and observance. B. Not to harm their neighbor, the other 6 Commandments (V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, & X) forbid men and women to do but to protect the rights of their neighbor: Killing and all bodily injuries - (forbidden by the 5 th Commandment) Sins of unchastity - (forbidden by the 6 th and 9th Commandment) Telling of lies/ falsehood - (forbidden by the 10 th Commandment) Acts of theft - (forbidden by the 7 th Commandment)

C. The order of charity is expressed well in the last 7 Commandments (IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, & X) (cf. I Tim. 1, 5) In loving one’s neighbor, Charity seeks God Because He is actually To be found there.   Our love for neighbor Should equal the love For our own selves Because as friends We must desire For others a share In the eternal happiness We hope to obtain For ourselves. God’s command to love our neighbor Is also a divine guide To human fulfillment And happiness.   [From: R. DOHERTY, O.P. (Gen Ed) “Your Power to Respond” in your Respnse to God, The Challenge of Christ

St. Dominic Savio is outstanding in keeping the commandments with his motto in life: “Death, but not sin” or “Death rather than commit sin” . Learners’ Activity Creed/Aral: RECITATION 1. God’s command to love our neighbor Is also a divine guide To human fulfillment And happiness.   [From: R. DOHERTY, O.P. (Gen Ed) “Your Power to Respond” in your Respnse to God, The Challenge of Christ] Write your reflection below about love of neighbor as an honor to God.

V. REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION 1. What do you think will happen when there are no common rules and each one follows his or her own personal commandments? 2. Who are the beneficiaries if we follow God’s Ten Commandments? Why? 3. Why do you think Christ commanded us to love? 4. What is the greater challenge in loving our neighbors?
