What is Social Care Work? “Social Care Work is a relationship-based approach to the purposeful planning and provision of care, protection, psychosocial support and advocacy in partnership with vulnerable individuals and groups who experience marginalisation , disadvantage or special needs. What is Social Care Work? Typically, a Social Care Worker is employed working with those who have physical or learning difficulties, disabilities, young people at risk, children who have been neglected or abused, family support services, addiction services, homeless services, elderly people, and in settings as diverse as residential care, day care, and community-based services. What is Social Care Work? 1 Social Care Workers plan and provide professional care to vulnerable individuals and groups of all ages who experience marginalisation, disadvantage or special needs. 2 As well as protecting and advocating for such individuals and groups, Social Care Workers professionally guide, challenge and support those entrusted to their care toward achieving their fullest potential. 3 Client groups are varied and include: children and adolescents in residential care; young people in detention schools/special care units; people with intellectual or physical disabilities; people who are homeless; people with alcohol/drug dependency; families in the community; or older people, etc. 4

Definitions of social care: “. . a profession committed to the planning and delivery of quality care and other support services for individuals and groups with identified needs.” (Irish Association of Social Care Educators) 5

Definitions of social care “ ‘a profession’ - Social care practice is not just an ordinary job. Nor is it done on a voluntary or amateur basis, which distinguishes it from the (equally valuable) care that is carried out informally in Irish society by family and community members.” “ ‘Professionalism’ implies an occupation with some status that requires access to a specific body of skills and knowledge.” (Irish Association of Social Care Educators,) Social care workers plan and provide professional individual or group care to clients with personal and social needs. Our Clients are Vulnerable, and our job it to work alongside them, to support encourage, empower them toward full participation in society. They face many barriers. 6

Definitions of social care “Social care workers strive to support, protect, guide and advocate on behalf of clients. Social care work is based on interpersonal relationships which require empathy, strong communication skills, self-awareness and an ability to use critical reflection.” (Members of the Irish Association of Social Care Workers (IASCW), Irish Association of Social Care Educators (IASCE) and Resident Managers’ Association (now, Irish Association of Social Care Managers, IASCM) ,2011) Conference presentation 7

What social care workers do? Practices. ‘What skill and talents do you need to develop? empathy, strong communication skills, self-awareness and an ability to use critical reflection’ ‘Teamwork and interdisciplinary work’ social care practitioners: ‘plan and provide’ ‘personal and social needs’ ‘Client groups are varied’ ‘support, protect, guide and advocate’ ‘interpersonal relationships’ .(Lalor & Share,2013:6) ‘core principles . . . include respect for the dignity of clients; social justice; and empowerment of clients’ Conference presentation 8
