2. Lesson objectives We will be able learn about Operating system(OS) Will learn the functions of operating system. Will learn about types of User interface of OS Get an idea of GUI and CLI

3. Operating system OS is system software that allows us to communicate with computer hardware in an interactive way. Every Computer or device needs an operating system to run other programs OS is vital piece of software for a computer. Examples : Windows, Mac os, linux, android etc.

4. Functions of OS It provides the GUI or CLI for the user to interact with the computer It manages the hardware and peripherals that are connected to the computer. It manages the transfer of programs into and out of memory. The OS will manage how the programs will be placed into the available memory. It divides the processing time between the different applications that are running.This allows a user to have multiple applications running at a time. Eg: playing music and doing excel report or searching in internet

5. Functions continued It manages security for the computer such as antivirus software and firewalls and manages access rights(amount of info a user can access) It manages file handling, allowing users to store, delete and move files on a computer. It keeps track of all actions carried out on files It manages utility software on the computer such as defragmentation and disk formatting software.

6. User Interface of OS and types UI is the point of human-computer interaction and communication in a device. 2 types of UI GUI and CLI GUI refers to Graphical user interface CLI refers to command line interface

7. GUI Is digital interface in which a user interacts with graphical components such as icons, buttons and menus

8. CLI Is a software mechanism you use to interact with your OS using your keyboard
