3. WHAT IS DATABASE? Database: A repository of logically related and similar data. An organized collection of related information so that it can easily be accessed, managed and updated. 3 E.g. * Dictionary *YouTube * Student Database *Library

4. WHAT IS SQL? SQL (pronounced " ess -que-el") stands for Structured Query Language. SQL is used to communicate with a database. However, the standard SQL commands such as "Select", "Insert", "Update", "Delete", "Create", and "Drop" can be used to accomplish almost everything that one needs to do with a database.  4

5. OPERATIONAL DATABASE • It is a database used to manage and store real time data. • It is the source of a data warehouse. • Elements in this DB can be added, removed , on the fly. •also referred to as  OLTP  ”On Line Transaction Processing” databases 5

6. EXAMPLE: •As customers order product from an online store, an operational database can be used to keep track of how many items have been sold and when the company will need to reorder stocks. •For a bank, the operational database processes checks and deposits, maintains balances and creates the monthly statements. 6

7. Data Warehouse - a large store of data accumulated from a wide range of sources within a company and used to guide management decisions . 7
