Operationalization of Variables By : Kainat Safdar

WORD “operationalization”

Example of word operationalization

Operationalization is the process of taking a concept and translating it into something that can be measured . Concept Operationalization variable Measurement

Operationalization of Variables Operationalization is the process of strictly defining variables into measurable factors Operationalization also sets down exact definitions of each variable , increasing the quality of the results, and improving the robustness of the design

Operationalization of Variables Operationalization  is the  process  by which concepts are linked to  variables . Process  involves identifying operations that will showcase values of a  variable  under study. O perationalization  specifies concrete observations that are thought to empirically capture a concept existing in the real world.

Conti… Operational Definition of a variable is a statement of specific dimensions and elements through which a concept will become measurable. Operational   variables  (or  operationalizing  definitions) refer to how you will define and measure a specific  variable  as it is used in your study.

EXAMPLE 1 SIMPLE In another example, the hypothesis “ Young participants will have significantly better memories than older participants ” is not operationalized Operationalization How do we define "young", “old” or "memory"? " Participants aged between 16 - 30 will recall significantly more nouns from a list if twenty than participants aged between 55 - 70" is operationalized .

Children that eat vegetables grow more quickly . “ It’s operationalization involves the answer to following questions : EXAMPLE 2

EXAMPLE 3 SIMPLE For example, if we are concerned with the effect of media violence on aggression, then we need to be very clear what we mean by the different terms. In this case, we must state what we mean by the terms “media violence” and “aggression” as we will study them Operationalization Therefore, you could state that “media violence ” is operationally defined (in your experiment) as ‘ exposure to a 15 minute film showing scenes of physical assault’ ; “ aggression” is operationally defined as ‘ levels of electrical shocks administered to a second ‘participant’ in another room’.

Conti… The key point here is that we have made it absolutely clear what we mean by the terms as they were studied and measured in our experiment. If we didn’t do this then it would be very difficult (if not impossible) to compare the findings of different studies into the same behavior.

How variable is defined operationally The  operational definition  of a  variable  is the specific way in which it is measured in that study. Another study might measure the same conceptual measure differently. If you were studying ways of helping people stop smoking, smoking cessation would be an outcome measure ( dependent  variable ).

Conti…. Operationalization involves spelling out precisely how a concept will be measured. Operational definitions must include the variable, the measure, and how you plan to interpret the measure. Indexes, scales, and typologies are used to measure multi-dimensional concepts. It’s a good idea to look at how researchers have measured the concept in previous studies.

Three main Steps in operationalization Formulating concepts into variables Formulating Variables into Measures Formulating Instruments for the Measures

Process of Operationalization

Two strategies are use in operationalization of variable 1.Substitution: Use a different variable that gets at the same dimension. 2.Division: Focus on one dimension of your concept or topic.

Advantages of operationalization Operationalization has the great advantage that it generally provides a clear and objective definition of even complex variables . It also makes it easier for other researchers to replicate a study and check for reliability . Operationalization gives the proper definition of every variable used in the study hence it increases the quality of study and makes it productive in nature .

Advantages of operationalization Ordinal measurements are unpredictable , but the operationalization allows the researcher to analyse the results statistically. Operationalization simplifies the complex variables and makes an opportunity for other researchers to replicate this study .

C onti…… Operationalization gives a valid, measurable and quantifiable index for all the variables under study. Operationalization can be used for the manipulation of variables at different levels in a study. It helps to narrow down the complex variable increase its quality and improve efficiency of research design
