1. SITUATION.

1.A. Area of Operations.

1.A.2. Terrain. Ranges vary in elevation, contain sparse shrubbery and trees. The Ranges
offer great fields of fire and Avenues of Approach. The Sparse vegetation offers very little
cover and concealment, however, there are built in fighting positions for Gunnery crews to
take cover behind. Range 143 and Range 145 are located in MPRC South by training areas
49 and 50. Range 105 and 109 are located on the North side of the Artillery Impact Area.

1.A.3. Weather. During the month of November we can expect the daily High and Low
temperature to fall from 56H/32L on 04NOV13 to 48H/24L on 20NOV13. Daylight during this
time will decrease from 10.5 hours to 9.8 hours of daylight. Sunrise will change from 0630 to
0648 hours and sunset will change from 1700 to 1641 hours. There will be roughly a 25%
change of precipitation throughout the day. Of the 25% chance of precipitation, 67% of the
time it is light snow, 13% of the time it is moderate snow and 10% of the time it is light rain.
Average snow depth on November is 1.9 inches. The average max wind speed is 16 mph
with the daily mean of 9 mph.

1.A.3.A. Effect on Friendly Forces. There will be very little effect on our units based on the
Monthly Averages. The chance of vehicles needing to be recovered will increase as the
amount of snow or rain increases. Soldiers will need to bring warm clothes as the
temperature drops during the night.

1.A.3.B. Effect on Ranges. If wind speeds exceed 20mph the range will go to a cease fire
because there is an increased risk of damaging Area Targets at high wind speeds. Snow
may short out heating pads or aid in covering the heat signature given by targets, making it
more difficult for Gunners to positively identify their targets.

1.B. Attachments and Detachments. All crews will remain under their parent companies for
the duration of gunnery. No special task organization will be created.

Brigade Support Battalion conducts un-stabilized gunnery tables I-III and V-
VI on Ranges 109, 105, 145, and 143 from 04-20NOV13 IOT certify crews and obtain crew
proficiency.

3. EXECUTION.

3.A. Commander’s Intent. Gunnery Crews conduct un- stabilized Gun Tables I-III, V-VI in
order to certify crews and reach proficiency in Security Operations (ART 6.7.3).

The purpose of this training is to qualify all BN crew served weapons crews on their assigned
weapons, qualify all BN convoy crews through Gun Table VI, and provide excellent,
uninterrupted sustainment support to 3ABCT’s gunnery. At end state, 64

BSB will have
qualified gun crews IOT provide security for resupply and recovery operations from the BSA to
the FSCs.

We will keep safety at the forefront at all times, we will execute our own Battalion gunnery with
professionalism, discipline, and competence while at the same time remembering our first
mission is to support and ensure the success of our brigade teammates.

Key Tasks:
 All leaders will adhere to the 10-step training model and TLPs.
 Companies will use M1151s to qualify on the crew served weapons and test on the gun
tables to the extent that supply and time allow.
 Training will be safe and effective.

3.B. Concept of Operations. This Operation will be conducted in IV phases: (1) planning, (2)
individual training, (3) crew training and (4) recovery.

3.B.1. PHASE I: Begins with receipt of BDE OPORD for Gunnery and ends with the
execution of individual training.

3.B.2. PHASE II: Begins with the execution of individual training and ends with crew training.
Prerequisites for individual training are that the Gunner and TC will both be qualified on their
weapon system. The individual gunnery phase trains individual crewmen and crew level skills
utilizing classroom and home-station training. During this home station training, it incorporates
tracking boards, gun laying exercises, and culminates with emergency operations in the Crew
Critical Skills (GT I).

3.B.2.A. Individual Training. Weapons Qualification (10m, Day, Night) and Movement and
Maneuver training.

3.B.2.B. Hands-on Crew Training. Gunnery Skills test (FM 3-20.21 Chp 14), Drivers

3.B.3. PHASE III: Begins with crew level training and ends with crew qualification. The crew
gunnery phase develops crew skills from the individual gunnery phase and begins with a live-
fire prerequisite, GT II, Crew Proficiency Course (CPC). After its successful completion, crews
begin training using live ammunition from their respective vehicle while in defensive or
offensive postures. The crew gunnery phase culminates with the Crew Qualification Course,
GT VI.

3.B.3.A. GT II. Conducted on Range 109. GT II is a dry fire exercise where crews will
practice engaging targets from three static battle positions and while moving between each
battle position. 2 Crews will execute GT II at one time and engage targets as they bound
forward. This will give crews a chance to execute crew drills for GT V and VI without having
live ammunition.
3.B.3.A.1. TASK. Engage and destroy stationary and moving targets from a stationary
and moving armed vehicle during both day and night operations.
3.B.3.A.2. CONDITIONS. Given a fully operational armed vehicle, MILES, full size or
scaled targets with LTIDS and blank ammunition.
3.B.3.A.3. STANDARDS. The crew must obtain a minimum of 700 of the 1,000 total
points and score at least 70 points on 7 of 10 engagements. VC tactical task (2x) is
evaluated based on the commander’s guidance. A “Go” must be received to continue to
the next GT.

1.A.1.A. GT III. Conducted on range 105. GT III is a static live fire to give gunners and
crews a chance to engage targets ranging from 400-1500 meters from a stationary battle
position.
1.A.1.A.1. TASK. Engage and destroy stationary single and multiple targets from a
stationary armed vehicle during both day and night operations.
1.A.1.A.2. CONDITIONS. Given a fully operational armed vehicle, three fourths scale
targets, allocated ammunition and all engagements are fired from a defensive posture.
1.A.1.A.3. STANDARDS. The crew must obtain a minimum of 700 of the 1,000 total
points and score at least 70 points on 7 of 10 engagements. VC tactical tasks are
assessed based on the commander’s guidance. A “Go” on that task (3x) must be achieved
to continue to the next GT.

1.A.1.A. GT V. Conducted on Range 145. GT V is crew practice for GT VI. Crews will
conduct Operations similar to GT II except they will be firing from 4 battle positions and it will
be conducted with live ammunition.
1.A.1.A.1. TASK. Engage and destroy stationary and moving targets from a stationary
and moving armed vehicle during both day and night operations.
1.A.1.A.2. CONDITIONS. Given a fully operational armed vehicle, full scale targets and
allocated ammunition.

1.A.1.A.3. STANDARDS. The crew must obtain a minimum of 700 of the 1,000 total
points and score at least 70 points on 7 of 10 engagements. VC tactical tasks are
assessed based upon the commander’s guidance. A “Go” must be received on the tactical
task (5x) to proceed to the next GT.

1.A.1.A. GT VI. Conducted on Range 143. GT VI is crew qualification and will be graded by
VCEs outside of our BN over video and audio systems placed in the vehicle. Crews that
pass GT VI will be able to move on to intermediate gunnery and execute CALFEX. FM 3-
20.21 paragraph 17-45 “if thermal or night optics are not available, all 10 tasks will be fired
during the day phase.”
1.A.1.A.1. TASK. Engage and destroy stationary and moving targets from a stationary
and moving armed vehicle during both day and night operations.
1.A.1.A.2. CONDITIONS. Given a fully operational armed vehicle, full scale targets and
allocated ammunition.
1.A.1.A.3. STANDARDS. The crew must obtain a minimum of 700 of the 1,000 total
points and score at least 70 points on 7 of 10 engagements. VC tactical tasks are
assessed based upon the commander’s guidance. A “Go” must be received on the tactical
task (6x) to proceed to collective gunnery.

1.A.2. PHASE IV: Begins with Recovery and ends upon completion of all AARs.

1.B. Scheme of Movement and Maneuver.

1.B.1. PHASE II: Training and GTI.

1.B.1.A. Gunnery Skills Testing: (GST) will begin on 230930SEP13 for instructor
refresher training (See appendices for instructor list). All gun crew personnel will report
240930SEP13 to the BN Basement for 4 days of training. Vehicle drills will commence on
25SEP13. All companies must make available at least 1x of each vehicle type in their
convoy gun crew fleet so the Soldiers can be trained on rollover drills, evacuating an injured
crewmember, and more. LT Brodt (A CO) is the OIC for GST, B CO will provide 1x SSG or
above with Subject Matter Expertise as an NCOIC, HHC will provide 1x E-5 or above as the
A-NCOIC. NCOICs may come from the gun crew personnel.

IMPORTANT- All gun crew personnel must attend training. Everyone will be out of tolerance
(3 months) by NOV13 Gunnery.

1.B.1.B. VCE Training: VCE Training will begin on 300930SEP13 in the BN Basement and
last until COB on 3OCT13. 4-10 will lead VCE training. A & B CO will each provide 4x NCOs
for training. These NCOs must have attended the GST training the week prior; they may
also come from within the gun crews.

1.B.1.C. Ranges: B CO will lead a BN M2 Range from 9-10OCT. A CO will lead a BN
M240/M249 Range from 17-18OCT. All gun crew personnel must qualify on their assigned
weapons (M240B or M2) at these ranges.

On 160730OCT13, 64BSB will conduct a range recon for all key leaders to visit the Gun
Table ranges. At each range, S3 will brief the range plan and S4 will brief the support plan.
The range recon will end o/a 1400.

Personnel: A, B, and HHC company command teams, OIC or NCOIC from S3, S4, and S6.
Companies and staff may exceed these requirements, but must pass information on
additional personnel to BN S4 for TMP scheduling. Range Control POC for this recon is Mr.
Michael Camp at 719-526-9716 or 719-338-3490.

1.B.1.E. CCTT Training:

Summary: BN S3 has scheduled two weeks of training at the CCTT from 21OCT13-
31OCT13. The first week will be the primary training week; Week 2 is for make-up training.

Timeline: OIC and NCOIC will report to Mr. Marvin Weeks at the CCTT to be directed to the
lead training civilian for this event NLT 26SEP13. This is necessary to ensure proper script
and other training requirements. Training will start at 0900 each day beginning 21OCT13.
64BSB has 2x HMMWV simulators and 1x AAR room reserved, so six to eight crews can
train each day. OIC and NCOIC will publish schedule per company NLT 10OCT13.

Personnel: B CO will provide 1x OIC and 2x VCEs to run the training. A CO will provide 1x
NCOIC and 1x VCE to support the training. HHC will provide 1x NCO to support the training.
These tasked personnel may be drawn from the gun crews and can rotate in to the training
and they must also support all days of training.

1.B.1.F. Gunnery:

Summary: The range flow for gunnery is essentially the same plan as was going to be
executed in August 2013. The key differences are every company will take ownership of
their gun crews for the entire process (including C2, tracking, food requests, etc) and Gun
Table Dates are more spread out due to sequester impacts on Friday training on FCCO
ranges. Gunnery Crews and Range detail will be able to use the hard stand building on
Ranges 109, 145 and 143. Tents may still be required for Range 105, to keep vehicles from
driving back and forth between Range 109 and 105 during table III. The GTs are designed
to build a crew’s ability to destroy targets through in different postures, threat target
postures, and complexity. This is done using the crawl, walk, run methodology, and ensures
the crews are confident and capable with their weapon system (FM 3-20.21 para.17-25).
Crews will have approximately 50 rounds per target, with one or more target for each of the
10 engagement types.

following all Convoy requirements. Trip tickets will be submitted with personnel, vehicles and
sensitive items. SP and radio checks will be done with S3 (Staff duty during non duty hours).
One vehicle in the convoy must be on BN net and one must be on range control freq. All
other vehicles will operate on an internal net. Vehicle spacing and speed will be determined

Left (heading west) on Titus and continue to Evans Army Community Hospital (left hand side).
Hospital is approx. 1.7 hour drive from Range 143 and 145 and a 45 minute drive from Range
105 and 109.

4.D. Unit Recovery Operations. Upon return to the motor pool from the range the priorities of
work are: Weapons/Optics, Vehicle Maintenance, OCIE inventories, AAR

4.E. Location of Key SI. SKL will be located with S6. Radios will be locked in every truck.
NVGs will be tied with 550 chord to the Soldier responsible for them. Weapons and Optics will
be transported in the each company’s equipment vehicle.
