Optical drive

By Daniel Calvo Cano 4ÂșC

Definition
In computing, an optical disc drive (ODD)
is a disk drive that uses laser light or
electromagnetic waves near the light
spectrum as part of the process of reading or
writing data to or from optical dises

Parts of an Optical
Drive
Rotational mechanism:Of course the implication
of the CLV(Constant linear velocity), as
opposed to the VAC, making the disk angular
velocity is not constant and therefore the rotary
engine must be designed to vary the speed
between 200 RPM on the outer edge and 500
RPM on the inside edge.

Parts of an Optical
Drive
Loading mechanisms:Current optical drives use
either a tray-loading mechanism, where the disc
is loaded onto a motorised or manually
operated tray, or a slot-loading mechanism,
where the disc is slid into a slot and drawn in by
motorized rollers.

LASER AND OPTIC
LASER: the laser is used to melt a crystalline
metal alloy in the recording layer of the disc.
Depending on the amount of power applied,
the substance may be allowed to melt back
(change the phase back) into crystalline
form or left in an amorphous

LASER AND OPTIC
Optic:The most important part of an optical disc
drive is the optical path, located in a pickup
head (PUH), which usually consists of a
semiconductor laser, a lens that guides the laser
beam, and photodiodes that detect the light
reflected from the disk surface.
