Oral Communication in Context Explains the functions, nature and process of communication (EN11/12OC-Ia-2) At the end of this lesson, the ff. topics will be covered:
“Communication is a social interaction through messages.” -Gerbner 1967-
Elements of Communication 1 . SPEAKER –chooses his or her purpose, crafts the message accordingly and, and decides how to deliver it, such as when a president delivers his state of the nation address.
Elements of Communication 2. MESSAGE- is what needs to be delivered or imparted to somebody else.
Elements of Communication 3 . LISTENER- receives the message. The listener who makes sense of what is said and reacts to it.
Elements of Communication 4. CHANNELS- are means by which the message is sent and received. There are only five channels: ears, eyes, skin, mouth, and nose. Channels sent and received via senses.
Elements of Communication 5. RESPONSE-is the only way the speaker knows the message has been received.
Elements of Communication 6. FEEDBACK- is the result of the speaker’s monitoring of the listeners response .
Elements of Communication 7. NOISE- is any barrier to communication. -Physical Noise -Physiological Noise -Psychological Noise
Elements of Communication 8. Communicative Situation - has two components. -Physical Location is usually chosen for the purpose it will serve. -Psychological Setting depends on who the participants are.
