Oral feeding Definition Assisting a helpless patient to take food and fluids Purposes T o assist patient to meet his nutritional needs

Preliminary assessment Check physicians order Plan diet according to the need of the client Ensure that the ordered diet is prepared properly and safely Find out food habits of client Find out any treatment or procedures to be carried out immediately Check the general condition of the client Check the clients ability to follow directions Check the articles available in the clients unit

Articles Tray containing prepared diet A glass of water Face towel Mackintosh and towel Backrest & cardiac table Fork and spoon Feeding cup with water and Kidney tray Purpose To offer at the end of meal To wipe the face To protect the bed and garments Positioning Too feed the client To wash the mouth before and after feed

Preparation of client and unit Create a pleasant environment Send the visitors away tactfully Offer bed pan (half an hr before) Help the client to dress and appear neat Positioning Help the client to wash his face and hands Protect the garments

Procedure Wash hands Sit by the bedside Feed the client slowly Give food in order Talk pleasantly When the client has eaten the food in sufficient amount the stop feeding and offer a glass of water

After care of the client and articles Help the client to wash his mouth , face and hands Dry the face and hands Provide comfortable position Tidy up the bed Take all articles and the food tray to the utility room Discard the waste Clean the articles in the cold water first and then with warm soapy water Clean and dry them. Replace them in their proper places Wash hands Record in the nurse’s record (IO chart)
