Oregon Acquisition

Basic Facts:
1. Became part of the U.S. June 15, 1846
2. James K. Polk was the president at the time
3. The British negotiators rejected the idea of the 49
th
parallel the first time.
4. British didn’t want to ruin their economic relationship with the U.S.
5. The U.S. was at war with Mexico in 1846 and then the British signed the
Oregon Treaty setting the boundary of the 49
th
parallel.


Beginning
North of California West of the Rocky Mountains
Oregon was claimed by Spain, Russia, Britain, and the United States in the
16
th
century.
In 1818 the U.S. and British agreed on a joint occupation and this lasted
until 1846.
Americans started to settle there in 1830
Oregon had very rich soil that caused thousands of families to move down
the Oregon Trail.

About the president
Many people were against the Oregon Acquisition but Polk wanted to
move along with the plan anyways.

Settlement of Oregon

Negotiations between British and U.S. started in the summer of 1845.
It was said to be called at the 49
th
parallel, but the British rejected the
request.
After the argument the boundary was set at the 49
th
parallel in June
1846.
