INTRODUCTION OLEDs are organic light emitting diode. Emerging Technology for displays in devices. Main principle behind OLED technology is electroluminescence. Offers brighter, thinner, high contrast, flexible displays. The flexible displays use FAMOLED (i.e., Flexible Active Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode. 3

WHAT IS AN OLED ? An OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diode is a light emitting device based on the principle of electroluminescence of organic crystals . An OLED is a solid-state semiconductor device that is 100 to 500 nanometres thick or about 200 times smaller than a human hair. 5
STRUCTURE OF OLED Substrate. Anode. Organic layer: Conductive layer (Hole Transport Layer) Emissive layer( Electron Transport Layer) Cathode. 6
LAYERS OF OLED’S 7
PRINCIPLE OF WORKING A voltage is applied across the anode and cathode. Current flows from cathode to anode through the organic layers. Electrons flow to emissive layer from the cathode. Electrons are removed from conductive layer leaving holes. Holes jump into emissive layer . Electron and hole combine and light emitted . 8
WORKING PRINCIPLE 9
TYPES OF OLED’s Passive Matrix There are two types of OLEDs namely:- Active matrix 10
DIFFERENCE B/W TYPES 11
Flexibility Ultra-lightweight, thin form Durability Brighter images 12 Revolutionary Features of FAMOLED
Advantages & Disadvantages Light weight & flexible plastic substrates Wider viewing angles & improved brightness Better power efficiency Response time UV sensitivity Less Lifetime Expensive Manufacturing Susceptible to water 13
Applications Small sreen devices: CELL PHONES CAMERA PORTABLE RECORDER MEDICAL DEVICES Transparent lighting doubles as a window LARGE SCREEN DISPLAYS : TV SCREENS COMPUTER MONITOR 14
Conclusion Organic Light Emitting Diodes are evolving as the next generation displays. As OLED display technology matures, it will be able to improve upon certain existing limitations of LCD including high power consumption limited viewing angles poor contrast ratios. 15
