What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a silent disease caused by the thinning of the
bone tissue and loss of bone density.
Our bones require calcium and phosphate but as we grow older,
this amount diminishes.
This weakens our bones and makes us liable to fractures without
injury, thus it is a silent disease.
Causes of osteoporosis:
Confined to the bed.
Vitamin D deficiency, lack of calcium, chronic arthritis,
kidney disease.
Excess consumption of alcohol and cigarettes.
Family history.
Symptoms:
Most often there are no symptoms for early detection.
In later stages:
Bone pain and low back pain.
Fractures without injury.
Slouched posture.
Treatment:
Maintain a healthy lifestyle
Perform regular exercise
Maintain a diet
Take medications that strengthen the bones and relive pain
(as advised by your doctor).
Steps to prevent:
Quit smoking and limit your alcohol intake.
Prevent falls to reduce the risk of fractures.
Maintain a wellbalanced diet.
Remember that your condition requires extra caution, invest in a
pair of shoes that has a good grip to avoid falling and follow your
doctors advice for a healthier life.
