Preparation for operation table in nursing procedures

1. PREPARATION OF OPERATION TABLE

Scenerio:
Mr. Joe, 48 years of old is diagnosed to have internal haemorrhoids, and posted for haemorrhoidectomy.
a) Prepare the operation table for surgery.

2. S.no STEPS OF PROCEDURE

Acquire information about the surgery to be carried out

2. Disinfect operating room table and its accessories.
3. Collect sterile linen,instrument sets and other necessities.
4. Ensure the availability of appropriate table and its accessories as follows;
 Arm supports
 Foot controls
 Head supports
 Positioners
 Storage carts and holders
 Drain pans, hoops and screens
 Radiographic top panels
 Restraint straps
 Side extensions
 Transfer boards


5. Adjust the individual segments of table appropriately.
6. Check table accessories, light, cautery machine and suction apparatus for their proper
functioning.

3. 7. Check the possibility of tilting the table to left and right.
8. Pad the table and ensure optimal pressure distribution
9. Ensure radiolucency of top of the operation table and anaesthesia screen, ventilator at
head of the table.

10. Adjust the height of the table in comfortable manner
11. Put on sterile gown, mask and gloves after scrubbing.
12. Cover table with sterile wrapper.
13. Arrange the supports for left anterolateral position such as, chest support, straps and
pillows.

14. Position the light for better illumination over the table.
15. Prepare mayo stand to place at foot end of table after receiving the patient.
16. Keep ready the additional items, sterile linen and transfer board to receive patient.
