The 21 white active tablets contain 0.15 mg Levonorgestrel and 0.03 mg Ehinylestradiol each. The 7 brown tablets are inert. Each brown tablet contains Ferrous Fumarate BP 75 mg.
Levonorgestrel is a second-generation progestin. It is the most widely prescribed birth control progestin worldwide.
PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTION Oral contraceptives of the combination type act by a multiplicity of mechanisms. Ovulation is inhibited by suppression of gonadotropin release, particularly the mid-cycle peaks and the viscosity of the cervical mucus is increased impairing sperm penetration, and an endometrium, less receptive for implantation is formed.
INDICATIONS A low dose oral contraceptive pill. OVOREST is indicated for fertility control in women and for the control of cases of dysfunctional uterine bleeding ( changes in hormones that directly affect the menstruation cycle, the condition is called dysfunctional uterine bleeding (DUB).) Symptomatic treatment of primary dysmenorrhea ( painful periods) where contraception is also desired.
CONTRA-INDICATIONS Impaired liver function Severe Migraine Coronary-artery disease and undiagnosed vaginal bleeding. Epilepsy, asthma, hypertension, depression or states in which fluid retention occur. Must be avoided in known or suspected pregnancy.
DOSAGE OVOREST tablets must be taken as directed and at intervals not exceeding 24 hours. Patients should be instructed to take the tablets at the same time every day, preferably after the evening meal or at bedtime. During the first cycle of administration, the patient is instructed to take one white tablet daily for 21 consecutive days beginning on Day 1 of her menstrual cycle, i.e. the first day of bleeding. One brown inert tablet is taken daily for the next 7 consecutive days. Withdrawal bleeding should usually occur 2 to 4 days after the last white tablet is taken.
