PRESNTATION ON +1 OXIDATION STATE OF Cu 10/12/2015 2

+1 OXIDATION STATE OF Cu ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE : Copper Cu + (28): [ Ar ] 3d 10. PROPERTIES: Magnetism : Diamagnetic. Color and spectra : colorless. [There are also some colored compounds: Cu 2 O is yellow or red Cu 2 CO 3 is yellow etc. Stability: Less stable than Cu 2+ and Cu 3+ . Cause: 1st ionisation potential is higher than the 2nd and 3rd ionisation potential. 10/12/2015 3

BINARY COMPOUNDS Cuprous oxide,Cu 2 O : Preparation: Reaction: Use: For making red ruby glass. 1.2CuCl +2NaOH=Cu 2 O↓(red) + 2NaCl + H 2 O 2.Fehling solution +glucose or aldehyde=Cu 2 O↓(red) +salt of carboxylic acid+ H 2 O. Cu 2 O+H 2 SO 4 = CuSO 4 + H 2 O Cu 2 O+ 2HNO 3 = Cu+ Cu(NO 3 ) 2 + H 2 O 10/12/2015 4

Cuprous chloride,CuCl : Preparation: Use: CuCl solution in HCl is used in analysis for the absorption of CO giving CuCl.CO.2H 2 O . Cuprous iodide, CuI : Preparation: Use: This reaction is used for the iodometric determination of Cu in solution . CuCl 2 + Cu= 2CuCl ( ppt ) 2CuSO 4 + 4KI= 2CuI+ 2K 2 SO 4 + I 2 2Na 2 S 2 O 3 + I 2 →Na 2 S 4 O 6 + 2NaI 10/12/2015 5

Cuprous thiocyanate, CuSCN : Preparation: Use: This reaction is used for gravimetric method for copper determination and separation of copper from zinc . 10/13/2015 6 CuSO 4 + 2NH 4 CNS= Cu(CNS) 2 + (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 2Cu +2 + HSO 3 - + H 2 O = 2Cu+ +HSO 4 - + 2H + Cu + + SCN - = CuSCN

ORGANO DERIVATIVES Acetylene complexes: 1.CuCl (in conc. HCl soln ) + CH≡CH → CuCl (C 2 H 2 ) or [CuCl 2 (C 2 H 2 )]-. 2.CuNH 2 ( soln )+ acetylenes containing CH≡C-→ Olefines complexes : T hey may be prepared by- Direct rection with Cu1 halides. May also prepared from cupric salts by reduction with trialkyl phosphites in ethanolic solution in presence of alkene . Yellow or red ppt 10/13/2015 11

BIOLOGICAL IMPORTANCE Blue protiens like plastocyanin and azurin act as electron transfer agents by means of a Cu 2+ /Cu + couple. Another oxidase, is galactose oxidase found in fungi where it catalyses the oxidation of –CH 2 OH in galactose to –CHO simultaniously reducing O 2 to H 2 O 2 by means of Cu 3+ /Cu + couple . 10/13/2015 12
