TOPIC OZONE WATER TREATEMENT

INTRODUCTION TO OZONE The ozone layer is a vital component in the history of life on the earth. Without ozone mankind and most forms of life that we know today probably would not exist and the environment of the planet would be extremely different.

Introduction continue Ozone has been instrumental in protecting earth and its life forms for so long. It is not just a beneficial molecule, but is absolutely essential to this planet we call home. But there is much apprehension and misunderstanding regarding ozone use in water treatment. There is a logarithmic increase in human population and zero increase in fresh water supply on this planet.

HISTORY OF OZONE Ozone was first thought to have been identified in 1839 by Christian schonbein, a Swiss chemist. He named it ozone from the Greek term “ too smell” because of its strong odour. But this scientist was not able to describe its molecular structure. And this was achieved by JEAN-LUIS SORET in the 1860.

Definition of ozone Ozone is a natural but unstable molecule. The pure gas a pure sky blue colour with a pungent acrid smell. The unstable gas ozone (O 3 ) is a molecule composed of three oxygen atoms, temporarily existing in a very unstable and reactive state. Ozone is so reactive that a suitable container for storage probably does not exist. Ozone is found in upper part of atmosphere that is in stratosphere and is formed due to UV radiation that falls on oxygen.

Properties of ozone. Ozone is a bluish colour gas that has a boiling point of 112 C. At atmospheric pressure ozone can partially dissolve in water. At standard pressure and temperature the solubility of ozone is thirteen times that of oxygen. Ozone is one of the strongest oxidiser available for water treatment.

What is ozone water treatment? Ozone water treatment is the process of using ozone to purify water that is removing microorganisms that can make you sick from drinking water. This process has been used in drinking water plants since 1903 where the first industrial ozonation plant was built.

HISTORY OF OZONE WATER TREATMENT Ozone was first used in water treatment in 1800 century and ozone is more widely used in Europe and Asia than the United states. (1) In 1886 ozone recognised as a disinfectant for water. (2) In 1891 ozone was found effective against bacteria. (3) In 1893 first ozone drinking water treatment facility in Netherlands. (4) In 1903 first plant built in the U.S.A. (5) In 1936 France alone had about 100 ozone water treatment facilities.

How do we produce ozone? Electric discharge :- it is also known as[ corona discharge ]. High voltage electricity+ Dry air or pure oxygen (O 2 ) O 3 Electrolytic ally :- This is the very simplest method to produce ozone ,This process is more expensive then electrical discharge and is same as above but here we use acid instead of oxygen. Spark plug

Photo chemically:- O2+O O 3 In this process the ultra violet radiation used for making ozone is obtained from red bulb. UV From Bulb

How does ozone work? Ozone will initiate a series of reactions in water that are very complex and quite specific to the water being treated . Ozone reacts in water or any aqueous solution in two ways:- DIRECTLY :- In directly ozone reacts with water via three mechanisms :- (1) Cycloaddition (+&-); on unsaturated bonds as a dipole. (2) Electrophillic (+); on molecular sites with strong electronic density (3) nucleophilic(-); on molecular sites with an electronic deficit.

INDIRECTLY:- via radicals formed as it decomposes in water ; A few such radicals are as follows; (1)Hydroxyl radical ,OH, a main reactive ingredient. (2)Hydro peroxide radical, HO2. (3)Superoxide radical ion, O2. (4)Ozonide radical ion,O3.

Advantages of ozone water treatment Ozone is very effective and rapidly reacts with bacteria viruses and has stronger germicidal properties than chlorination. It has a very strong oxidising power with a short reaction time. The treatment process does not add any chemicals to water. Ozone can eliminate a wide variety of inorganic, organic and microbiological problems and taste and odour problems.

Disadvantages of ozone water treatment Ozone water treatment is much expensive than other treatment levels. In ozone water treatment there must be professional proficient for water treatment and system maintenance. It does not provide any germicidal or disinfection residual to prevent re growth. Due to its less solubility in water special mixing techniques are needed. Fire hazards and toxicity issues associated with ozone generation.
