LESSON ABOUT CONDITIONALS

Slide Content

Good Day!

What is your biggest “ What if” in life?

If you put an ice cube under the sun…

If I had a lot of money…

If I only had slept early last night …

Using Conditionals in Expressing Arguments

What is conditional? Conditionals are statements expressing the result of a particular condition. If-clause and when-clause present the condition while the main clause explains the results. In a statement, conditionals may appear first before the main clause. If the main clause appears before conditional, the meaning of the sentence remains the same.

What is clause? A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a verb. It can express a complete idea or just part of one, depending on the type of clause. Independent Clause Dependent Clause

Independent Clause Can stand alone as a complete sentence. Example: She went to the market. Dependent Clause (also called subordinate clause) Cannot stand alone; it needs an independent clause to complete the meaning. Example: Because she was hungry (needs more to complete the thought).

3. Second conditional - is used in dealing with things impossible in the present and are unlikely to occur in the future.

It is formed using this structure: CONDITION If + past simple MAIN CLAUSE would + base form of verb If I only passed the test, I would celebrate and party. if I received a lot of money. I would buy a new phone. If I were a boy, I would do everything to please my girl.

4. Third conditional - used to talk things that were possible in the past and can no longer happen now . Used to express regret.

It is formed using this structure: CONDITION If + had + past participle MAIN CLAUSE would have + past participle If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam. If they had left earlier, they would have caught the train.

Let us summarize!
