causes Pallor can be produced by edema or myxedematous tissue surrounding the super cial blood vessels, vasoconstriction, anemia, or any combination.

CLINICAL OCCURRENCE Localized Pallor: Cold exposure, vaso-constriction (e.g., Raynaud phenomenon), arterial insu ffi ciency (narrowed lumina, thrombosis, embolism), edema;

raynaud phenomena

Generalized Pallor: G e n er aliz e d vaso-cons trict ion—exposure to cold, severe pain, hypoglycemia, volume depletion or low cardiac output s tat e s ;

Chronic Pallor: Normal in some persons, anemia, renal f ailure (anemia may contribute); Paroxysmal Pallor: Apneic periods in periodic breathing, hypertensive periods rom pheochromocy-toma, vertiginous periods in Ménière disease, migraine , syncope ;

Obscuration of Skin Vessels: Edema, myxedema (anemia may contribute), scleroderma.

Clinical grading of pallor Mild: pallor of conjunctiva and/or mucous membrane. Moderate: pallor of conjunctiva and/or mucous membrane + pallor of skin. Severe: pallor of conjunctiva and/or mucous membrane + pallor of skin + pallor of palmar creases.
