A pap smear (also known as the Pap test) is a medical procedure in which a sample of cells from a womans cervix ( the end of the utrerus that extends into the Vagina ) is collected and spread ( smeared) on microscope slide . The cells are examined under a microscope in order to look for pre –malignant (before –cancer ) or malignant (cancer ) changes. What is a pap smear Test
.All women have initial pap smear test no late than 21 yrs old .3 yrs after onset of sexual intercourse .After initial test ,have annually or biannually .After age 30, because screened for 2-3years unless has high factor developing cervical cancer. WHEN TO DO PAP SMEAR ?
After menses preferably mid cycle. When there is no signs of inflammations or infections. No prior Vaginal douching or contraceptives cream /jelly . .No sexual intercourse <12 hrs prior to Pap smear . Pregnancy is Not a contraindication for Pap smear . WHEN TO DO A PAP SMEAR ?
Age 70 and “adequate recent screening Three consecutive negative pap smears No abnormal pap smears in last 10 years Hysterectomy for benign lesion. When to stop routine screening
Patient must be advise to make an appointment other than during menstruation. .Before appointment : . Avoid intercourse for 2 days. .Refrain from douching for 1 days Cease the use of vaginal medication for at least 48 hours. Preparations before taking pap smear
Inform and explain the procedure to patient .Advice Patient to void. .Provide Privacy . .Assistant position Lithotomy to her on examining table. .Drape patient permit minimal exposure. Pre procedure
Undress completely or only from the waist down Lie down on your back on exam table with knees bent .heels rest in supports called stirrups. Insert speculum into vagina .the speculum holds the walls of your vagina so that cervix can seen easily. Take samples from cervix using a soft brush and flat scraping device called a spatula Procedure
