About the Novel
"The Great Gatsby" is a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald and
published in 1925. Set in the summer of 1922, the story is
narrated by Nick Carraway, a young man from the Midwest
who moves to Long Island, New York, to pursue a career in
finance. He rents a house in the affluent West Egg district, next
to the mansion of the mysterious and enigmatic Jay Gatsby.
As the novel unfolds, it becomes clear that Gatsby and
Daisy have a romantic history. Gatsby's sole motivation
is to win Daisy back, despite that she is married. Nick
becomes entangled in their complicated relationship.

3. What is Jazz ?
●The Jazz Age was an era in American history from the
early 1920s until 1929. This period is sometimes also
referred to as the Roaring Twenties, due to the explosion
of financial success, and wild, carefree lifestyles of the
youth. Cars, radio, television, and of course jazz music
were all introduced during the twenties.

●Jazz originated in New Orleans and quickly spread
throughout the country and then Europe. It was
fast-paced, highly syncopated and often featured
improvisation.

Representation of 'Jazz’ Culture in Novel
1. Social Disparities :
The division between old money and new
money , as seen in the contrast between Tom Buchanan
and Jay Gatsby, reflects the growing disparity between
traditional aristocracy and the newly wealthy during the
era.
Gatsby sees money as the means to fulfilling his
‘’incorruptible dream’’ . when Nick tells him, ‘’ you can’t
repeat the past , Gatsby is incredulous; ‘ can’t repeat
the past?

2.The American Dream :
The characters aspirations and pursuit of the
American Dream, particularly Gatsby’s desire to win back Daisy
‘ exemplify the era’ s idealistic yet often elusive goals.

The Great Gatsby,Fitzgerald writes about the foundation
of the American Dream, and the American society which
took pride in itself as being founded on equality and
freedom. Fitzgerald draws a picture of the Jazz Age that
reflects both the suffering of the working class, and the
ignorance of upper class.

Materialism and Consumerism: The novel's characters
exhibit a fixation on material wealth and status. This mirrors
the societal emphasis on acquiring possessions as a
measure of success and happiness during the Jazz Age.
4. Materialism and Consumerism:
3.Extravagant Parties:
Gatsby's opulent parties symbolize the era's pursuit
of pleasure and excess. The parties are characterized
by lavish decorations, music, and dancing, reflecting the
indulgence and hedonism of the Jazz Age.

5 .Jazz Music:
The 1920s was also dubbed the Jazz Age, due to the rapid rise
in popularity of jazz music. With jazz having originated from
African American culture.

The character of Jordan Baker challenges traditional gender
roles, reflecting the evolving role of women in society during the
1920s.
6. Changing Gender Roles :

Conclusion
In "The Great Gatsby," F. Scott Fitzgerald masterfully
portrays the Jazz Age as a time of superficiality,
excess, and moral ambiguity. Through vibrant
characters and symbolic imagery, he explores the
allure and emptiness of wealth, delivering a poignant
commentary on the fleeting nature of glamour and
the disillusionment of the American Dream.
