About This Presentation

Patrimonialization is a process by which a material or immaterial element becomes a constitutive part of a community’s identity that imbues said element with meaning and significance. Heritage objects have a dual nature, they are primary objects (natural or man-made) in addition to secondary objec...

2-ThePatrimonializationprocess
Heritage objects are: “… objects separated from their original (primary) context and
transferred to a new, museum reality in order to document the reality from which they
were separated”. Van Mensh (1992, p. 106)
“attribution of value, (is) a judgment made by the cultural field that consigns it as an
element with a differentiating character. And by distinguishing it in this way, it makes it
‘special’ and in a prominent position compared to other objects of the same nature, giving
it a sense of exceptionality.” Lima (2008, p. 36),
✓Patrimonializationis the process through which an object is integrated into the
collection of a heritage institution and becomes a heritage object.
✓Patrimonializationis a research activity which reconstructs and documents a HO’s
context

3-Ontological analysis of the patrimonializationprocess
HO are documents(Briet1951)
Patrimonializationis a process
Patrimonializationis a decision-making process. These
decisions are neither random nor ad hoc.

5-Concluding remarks
Patrimonializationis a very important process through which a HO passes. It is the
entry point to a chain through which a HO is appropriated by Culture in general, by a
Heritage Institution and becomes fit to successive curatorial activities, both within the
institution which holds it, and, as it is digitally represented, by digital curators.
Patrimonializationalso assigns to an object metadata that supports curatorial activities
throughout the whole HO’s lifecycle. Although such metadata may not be directly accessed by
the general public, they are essential inputs to curatorial and collections’ management. Due to
its importance, patrimonializationshould be guided by institutional policies.
Scientific Community worldwide are evolving to adopt standards for scientific digital data (FAIR
Digital Object Framework) that are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable, as
suggested by the FAIR Principles. They show the way to the digital Heritage community. A
Heritage Object model has a role in proposing different facets through which heritage data can
be described, found, sought, explored and accessed. This increases HO’s plasticity and
potential of being largely reusable by Culture, Science, Education, and Citizenship.
