TOPIC: Parallel comparatives

CONCEPT OF PARALLEL COMPARATIVES
We have seen before in the lesson about comparatives that the word “the” is not
used with the adjective when comparing two entities, but rather it is used together
with the superlative adjective, i.e. when comparing three or more adjectives.

However, there’s an exception to this rule where you can use the word “the”
together with a comparative word. In this case, you’ll have to have two such
phrases in the same sentence using the “the + comparative” structure – each
phrase must be separated by a comma. So, these types of sentences are divided
into two parts with a comma, and each part of the sentence must begin with “the
+ a comparative” adjective.

MEANING
This structure is used to show proportionate increase or decrease of both entities
being compared.
