PARALLEL STRUCTURES
OBJECTIVES:
Recognize the faulty parallels in the sentences.
Rewrite sentences with the correct parallel structure.
Create an essay using parallel structure.
Parallelism”
The repetition of a grammatical form within a sentence.
Means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance.
VERB
shows an action, occurrence or state of being.
EX:
My sister walks and runs in the Plaza.
She eats, sleeps, and cries in her room.
Yesterday, Donna watched a movie, cleaned her apartment, and made lunch.
Romeo cooked the foods, washed the plates, and watered the plants.
ADJECTIVE
words that describe the qualities or states of being of nouns.
EX:
Mark is an industrious and helpful boy.
Lea is polite and honest with her classmates.
Gerund or Gerund Phrases
the noun form of a verb that ends in –ing.
EX:
Maria loves dancing, swimming, and singing.
Joshua enjoys playing volleyball, singing love songs, and baking cakes.
I like skiing, ice skating, and hiking.
Adverb or Adverbial Phrases
words that modifies a verb, an adjective, another adverb or even a whole sentence.
EX:
Rose dances gracefully and happily.
Our secretary writes legibly and clearly.
The group meets at night and on weekends.
Infinitive or Infinitive Phrases
is a verbal consisting of the word -to plus a verb.
EX:
Jason likes to read and to write.

REMEMBER
A parallel structure that begins with CLAUSES must keep on with clauses.
Changing to another pattern will break the parallelism.
