PAROTITIS

DEFINITION Parotitis is inflammation of the parotid salivary gland. Inflammation results in swelling of the tissues that surround the salivary glands, redness, and soreness.

TYPES OF PAROTITIS Acute bacterial parotitis Chronic recurrent parotitis Viral parotitis Recurrent parotitis in children

Acute bacterial parotitis: This is an acute inflammatory response to bacterial infection which causes erythema(redness), pain, swelling and tenderness over the gland on the side of the cheek along with the appearance of pus from the opening of the duct on the inside of the cheek.

CLINICAL MANIFESTATION Bad taste in the mouth Difficulty opening the mouth Dry mouth Face pain Fever Mouth or facial, especially when eating Redness over the side of the face or the upper neck Sore throat Swelling in the jaw region Difficulty in swallowing Difficulty in breathing High fever
