LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the 60-minute period, at least 85% of the learners should be able to: 1. identify the eight parts of speech, 2. value their learning through categorizing words by part of speech; and 3. construct a sentence using the eight parts of speech.

Directions: Categorize which part of speech each word belongs to.
NOUN Noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea . Example: The dog barked at the stranger . The car is parked outside .
PRONOUN Pronoun are words that take the place of nouns in a sentence. Example: Paul gave Emily stationery because he wanted her to write to him when she could.
VERB Verbs are words that show an action, occurrence, or state of being. Example: She laughed when he tripped over his own feet . They are excited about the upcoming trip.
ADJECTIVE An adjective describes a pronoun or noun. Example: The tall man reached the top shelf easily . The indigenous people of the region have a rich cultural heritage.
ADVERB An adverb describes or modifies an adjective, a verb, or another adverb . Example: He ran quickly . She was very happy.
PREPOSITION Preposition comes before a pronoun or noun to help form a phrase that modifies another word in a sentence. Example: The pencil is in the drawer. Mia is coming for dinner at 6 p.m.
CONJUNCTION Conjunction is a word that connects clauses or sentences. Example: I wanted to go out, but it started raining . She was tired, yet she stayed up late to finish her project.
INTERJECTION Interjection is a word used to express strong emotions or feelings. Example: Oops! I didn’t mean to slam the door. Ouch! That hurts.
