Session 2: Parts of Speech (2) “What rules in a sentence?” 19 Feb 2022

Review: ( Make sure you know the answer) What is part of speech? Why do we have to know parts of speech in a sentence? How do you know if a word is a NOUN, VERB, ADJECTIVE, or ADVERB?

Rule of Sentence Every sentence must have: SUBJECT + PREDICATE (SP). Subject must be in form of Noun/Pronoun . Predicate must be in Verb . Example: 1. Freedom is wanted by many Subject (Noun) Predicate (Verb ) 2. They clarify the matter. Subject (Noun) Predicate (Verb )

Let’s Practice Which one is Subject and Predicate? The regulation stipulates about taxation. Subject:…. (Part of speech: ….) Predicate: …… ( ) The statement indicated his intention. Subject:…. (Part of speech: ….) Predicate: …… ( )

In Chart. Structure of a Sentence SUBJECT PREDICATE OBJECT NOUN/Pronoun VERB NOUN Freedom needs courage MODIFY/MENERANGKAN - POSITION Example Adjective Modifies Noun Before Noun/after tobe -It is a poisonous snake adj N -The snake is poisonous Adverb Modifies Verb/ adj / Before /after verb (other )adverb I slowly walk I walk slowly ( slowly menerangkan cara berjalan -verb ) Very slow, very slowly After breakfast

How do we know if it is a noun or verb? (ENDING THAT FORMS NOUN & VERB) NOUN VERB -MENT, -NESS, -HOOD, -TION, -ITY, -DOM -IFY, -ATE, -EN, -ED Example: - judgement - happiness - neighbourhood - qualification Example: - clarify - compensate - lighten - studied Ada lagikah ending pembentuk kata benda /kata kerja lainnya ? You are lucky, there are maaaanyy other endings besides the above. Study more of them yourself.

CONNECTING WITH TOEFL TEST The point: Place correct parts of speech in their correct position in a sentence. ( Tempatkan jenis kata yang benar dalam posisi yang benar dalam kalimat ) That is, if it is subject, put a noun/pronoun. (Don’t’ put a verb, for example) Look at this sample: This ……………. is killing me. a. bored b. boredom c. boring We need subject in this sentence. Subject must be noun. So, we choose “b. Boredom”, because “boredom” is a noun. Don’t choose “bored/boring”, because it is adjective. https://padlet.com/apurapur/Bookmarks

HOW CAN we know if a word is NOUN or VERB? First, you know its meaning in Bahasa Indonesia. She is walking. (You know walking is a verb, because you know in bahasa Indonesia “walking” is “ berjalan ”, yaitu sebuah KEGIATAN) Second, you know it from the ending. His a. judge ment is correct b. judged. (You know that judgement is Noun from the ending “ ment ”. Thus, because subject must be a noun, it is correct place)

TIPs To have good skills (and good score) in Structure: Its better if you know the MEANING of the English words. So you can guess correctly (for example, “walking” we discussed) So, improve your VOCABULARY to improve your TOEFL score. Use Grammar Knowledge (parts of speech, subject, predicate) Do lots of practice iN TOEFL tests. Be curious to know rules in English.
