REPRODUCTIVE
TERMINOLOGY

part of the male genitourinary system

Female reproductive system, as seen in sagittal
section.

MALE REPRODUCTIVE KEY TERMS
•bulbourethral (bul bo u re'thrah
‑ ‑ ‑
gland One of two small
glands on either side of the urethra below the prostate
that secretes part of the seminal fluid; also called
Cowper's gland
•vas (ductus) deferens (defer enz)

The duct that
conveys spermatozoa from the epididymis to the
ejaculatory duct
•ejaculation (e jak u la'shun)
‑ ‑
Ejection of semen from the
male urethra ejaculatory (e jak'u lah to re)
‑ ‑ ‑
duct The
duct formed by union of the ductus deferens and the
duct of the seminal vesicle. It carries spermatozoa and
seminal fluid into the urethra.
•epididymis (ep ih did'ih mis)
‑ ‑ ‑
A coiled tube on the
surface of the testis that stores sperm until ejaculation

•*inguinal (ing'gwinal)

canal The
channel through which the testes
descend in the male. In the female it
contains a ligament that extends from the
uterus to the vulva.
•penis (pe'nis) The male organ of
copulation and urination
•prepuce (pre'pus) The fold of skin over
the glans penis; the foreskin

•prostate (pros'tate) gland A gland that
surrounds the urethra below the bladder in
males and contributes secretions to the semen
•scrotum (skro'tum) A double pouch that
contains the testes
•semen (se'men) The thick secretion that
transports spermatozoa (spelled semin when
used as a root)
•seminal vesicle One of two saclike structures
behind the bladder that contributes to the
semen

•testis (tes'tis) (pl. testes) The male
reproductive gland; also called testicle
•testosterone (testos'terone) The main
‑ ‑
male sex hormone
•*urethra (ure'thrah) The

duct that
carries urine out of the body and also
transports semen in the male

•balanitis (balani'tis) Inflammation of the glans
‑ ‑
penis and mucous membrane beneath it (root
balanlo means "glans penis")
•circumcision (serkumsih'zhun) Surgical
‑ ‑
removal
of the end of the prepuce
•cryptorchidism (kripior'kidizm) Failure
‑ ‑
of the
testes to descend into the scrotum (cryptlo
means "hidden")
•hydrocele (hi'drosele) The

accumulation of fluid
in a saclike cavity, especially within the covering
of the testis or spermatic cord
•impotence (im'potens) Weakness, especially

inability of the male to achieve or maintain
erection
•*infertility (infertil'ihte
‑ ‑
) Decreased capacity to
produce offspring

•phimosis (fimo'sis

) Narrowing of the
opening of the prepuce so that the
foreskin cannot be pushed back over the
glans penis
•prostatic hypertrophy (hiper'tro fe)

Enlargement of the prostate gland due to
age; may cause compression of the urethra
and interfere with urination
•*sterility Complete inability to produce
offspring
•varicocele (var'ihkosele) Enlargement
‑ ‑
of
the veins of the spermatic cord

FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE KEY TERM
•cervix (ser'viks) Neck; usually means the lower
narrow portion (neck) of the uterus
•clitoris (klit'oris) A small erectile body above

the urethral opening that is similar to the penis
•endometrium (endometreum) The
‑ ‑ ‑
inner lining
of the uterus
•estrogen (es'tro jen) A group of hormones that
produce female characteristics and prepare the
uterus for the fertilized egg. The most active of
these is estradiol.

•labia majora (la'beah m

ah jor'ah) (s. labium
majus) The two large folds of skin that form the
sides of the vulva (root labilo means "lip")
•labia minora (la'beah minor'ah) (s
‑ ‑
. labium
minus) The two small folds of skin within the
labia majora
•menses (men'seze) The monthly flow of bloody
discharge from the lining of the uterus
•myometrium (rniome'ireum)
‑ ‑ ‑
The muscular
wall of the uterus

•ovary (o'vah re)

One of the two female gonads
•ovulation (ov u la'shun)
‑ ‑
The release of a mature ovum
from the ovary (from ovule meaning "little egg")
•ovum (o'vum) (pl. ova) The female gamete or
reproductive cell
•perineum (per ih ne'um)
‑ ‑
The region between the thighs
from the external genitals to the anus
•progesterone (pro jester one) A hormone produced by

the corpus luteum and the placenta that maintains the
endometrium for pregnancy
•uterus (u'ter us) The organ that receives the fertilized

egg and maintains the developing offspring during
pregnancy
•vagina (vah ji'nah) The muscular tube between the
cervix and the vulva
•vulva (vul'vah) The external female genital organs

•hymen (hi'men) A fold of mucous membrane
that partially covers the entrance of the vagina
•menarche (menar'ke) The start of regular

monthly periods
•menopause (men'opaws) The cessation of

menstrual activity mons pubis (monz pu'bisl The
rounded, fleshy elevation over the pubic joint
that is covered with hair after puberty

•candidiasis (kandidi'asis
‑ ‑ ‑
) Infection with the
fungus Candida; a common cause of vaginitis
•dyspareunia (disparu'neah
‑ ‑ ‑
) Pain during
sexual intercourse
•endometriosis (endomeireo'sis) Growth of
‑ ‑ ‑ ‑
endometrial tissue in various locations in the
pelvic cavity.
•fibrocystic (fibrosis'tik
‑ ‑
) disease of the breast
A condition in which palpable lumps that change
with the menstrual cycle can be felt in the
breasts. They are usually associated with pain
and tenderness.
•leukorrhea (lukore'ah
