Parts of a Flowering Plant
Integrated Science - Grade 7
Objectives
❖Identify the main parts of a plant as shoot and root systems.
❖Label the main parts of a flowering plant.
❖State the main function of each part of a plant.
What are Flowering Plants?
Flowering plants are a type of vascular plant that produces
flowers in order to reproduce.
Flowering plants produce seeds within a fruit. The scientific
name for flowering plants is angiosperms.
Some flowering plants have fruits that are edible. Examples:
Mango, Apple, Orange,etc.
Some have fruits that are inedible. Examples: Chinaberry
Shoot and Root systems
•Flowering plants have two main “body systems:” the shoot system
and the root system.
•The shoot system is above ground and includes the organs such as
leaves, buds, stems, flowers and fruits.
•The root system includes those parts of the plant below ground, such
as the roots, tubers, and rhizome.

Examples
Shoot System
1. Leaves
- make food by photosynthesis
and perform gas exchange
- store some food and are eaten
by animals, including humans, can
you give examples?
- stops water from falling heavily
on the soil and so help prevent
soil erosion
2. Stems
- hold up the leaves for photosynthesis
- pass water and mineral salts up the stem
- pass food up and down the stem
-if green, can carry out photosynthesis
- store some food and are eaten by animals, including humans
- can you think of some edible stems?
-
Shoot System cont’d
Aloe vera and cacti have thick
stems that store water in dry
habitats. What is a habitat?
Stem tubers are swollen
underground stems.
They store carbohydrate for
the growth of new plants
E.g. Irish potato
Stems modified for storage
Shoot System cont’d
3. Flowers (the reproductive parts
of mosts plants )
- make the fruit and seeds
- supply food (nectar) for insects
and birds
- are attractive to humans
- can you identify any edible
flowers?
4. Fruits
-protect the seed and help with
seed dispersal
-supply food for many animals,
including humans
- are eaten by animals that are
then eaten by humans
5. buds
-protect the flower as it grows

Root System
Roots
•Roots act like straws absorbing water and minerals from the soil.
•Tiny root hairs stick out of the root, helping in the absorption process.
•Roots help to anchor the plant in the soil so it does not fall over.
•Some roots also store food and are then eaten by animals, including
humans.
•Roots hold onto the soil so that it is not washed away.
