Amount of the solute
present in one million
parts of the solution.
PARTS PER
MILLION

Parts per million (ppm) is the number
of units of mass of a contaminant per
million units of total mass. More: ppm
(or ppmm) is used to measure the
concentration of a contaminant in
soils and sediments. In that case 1
ppm equals 1 mg of substance per kg
of solid (mg/kg).

PARTS PER
MILLION (PPM)
FORMULA:
Parts per Million x
Mass of Solute
Mass of Solution
x 10
6
Mass of Solution = Mass of Solute + Mass of Solvent
UNIT OF MEASUREMENT:
ppm

PRACTICE PROBLEM #1
A 5.00 g sample of solution has 3.8x 10 g of
calcium ion. Calculate the concentration in ppm.
GIVEN:
-5
-5
Mass of Calcium Ion = 3.8x 10 g
Mass of Solution = 5.00g
FIND:
Concentration in ppm

PRACTICE PROBLEM #1
A 5.00 g sample of solution has 3.8 x 10 g of
calcium ion. Calculate the concentration in ppm.
SOLUTION:
-5
ppm x
3.8 x 10 g of Calcium Ion
-5
5.0g of Solution
x 10 =

PRACTICE PROBLEM #2
35 grams of ethanol is dissolved in 115 grams of
water. What is the concentration of ethanol in parts
per million (ppm)?
GIVEN:
Mass of Ethanol = 35 g
Mass of Solution = ?
FIND:
Concentration in ppm
Mass of Solvent = 115g

PRACTICE PROBLEM #2
FORMULA:
Parts per Million(ppm) x
Mass of Solute (g)
Mass of Solution (g/mL)
x 10
6
Mass of Solution = Mass of Solute + Mass of Solvent
35 grams of ethanol is dissolved in 115 grams of
water. What is the concentration of ethanol in parts
per million (ppm)?

PRACTICE PROBLEM #2
SOLUTION:
-5
I. Find the Mass of Solution
35 grams of ethanol is dissolved in 115 grams of
water. What is the concentration of ethanol in parts
per million (ppm)?
Mass of Solution = 35g + 115 mL = 150 mL/g

PRACTICE PROBLEM #2
SOLUTION:
-5
I. Find the PPM
35 grams of ethanol is dissolved in 115 grams of
water. What is the concentration of ethanol in parts
per million (ppm)?
ppm x
35g of Ethanol
150g/mL of Solution
x 10 =

PRACTICE PROBLEM #2
ANSWER:
-5
2.3x10 ppm
35 grams of ethanol is dissolved in 115 grams of
water. What is the concentration of ethanol in parts
per million (ppm)?
