contributions this year as not only a mentor, but now
the leader for Pathways for Kids’ strategic impact and
future as non-profit. Nate is an intellectual property
litigation partner in Kirkland & Ellis LLP’s Bay Area
office. His practice focuses on high stakes patent infringement and trade secret
litigation. Nate has worked on cases in state courts and has also worked with
technical experts to develop an understanding of complex technologies,
including DNA sequencing, adaptive cruise control in automobiles, and organ
transplant diagnostics. Nate further enhances his trial and advocacy skills
through his involvement in various pro bono matters.
Thank you, Nate, for continuing to inspire our children with your incredible
skillset and confidence. Renewing our Commitment for 2025 MIKE MONTALBAN, VICE PRESIDENT Education is the cornerstone of a thriving society, yet
today, it stands at a crossroads. Nationally, debates
on curriculum and equity have intensified, but here in
San Francisco, Pathways for Kids remains steadfast in its
mission: equipping children to see and seize opportunity
in every walk of life. Through innovative mentorship
programs and the tireless work by our dedicated staff, we’ve empowered
hundreds of young minds to dream boldly and work diligently. As Benjamin
Disraeli once said, “The greatest good you can do for another is not just to
share your riches, but to reveal to them their own.” This year, we have doubled
down on our commitment to unlocking potential, ensuring every child we
touch feels supported, seen, and inspired.
Our approach embraces the power of co-elevation—a philosophy that
recognizes mutual success as the ultimate goal. When our children thrive, so
do we as mentors, leaders, and community builders. This past year, we
celebrated remarkable milestones: over 90% of program participants
demonstrated measurable improvements in academic performance and career
readiness. By pairing students with mentors from diverse industries, we’ve
instilled resilience, ambition, and the confidence to navigate a competitive
world. As we look to the future, our focus remains clear: manifesting high
outcomes for San Francisco’s youth by fostering relationships that uplift and
empower. Together, we illuminate the path to success, ensuring every child
can rise to meet their potential.

From Building Dreams to Providing
Safety in Potrero Hill
BY RICKY GRIFFITH,
PROGRAM DIRECTOROver the past six months,
Pathways for Kids has delivered
a series of engaging programs
that empowered students and
expanded their horizons.
Kicking off this period, Chris
Baradeux spoke passionately
about real estate, entrepreneurship, and the value of maintaining
professionalism and self-respect. His talk inspired students to see the
power of self-presentation and determination in achieving their goals.
Pathways continued to inspire with a dynamic two-part architecture
presentation at Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, featuring Steve
Cuddy and Matt Peek. Their insights into design and building
captivated the students, showcasing the creativity and technical skills
behind the field of architecture.
Additionally, Pathways partnered with the City to host presentations
from both SFPD and SFFD, giving students an inside look at careers in
public service and the importance of community engagement.
Andrew Cote took the stage to explore tech opportunities in the Bay
Area, offering practical advice on conference organization and
production. His talk highlighted the growing possibilities in the tech
industry, encouraging students to envision themselves as part of this
innovative field.
To broaden the reach of these programs, Pathways also brought
speakers directly to Gateway High School. Adam Suleman captivated
students with his knowledge of real estate and the hospitality industry,
shedding light on pathways into hotel management and customer
service. Matt Murphy followed with a compelling talk about sports
broadcasting, sharing his passion for storytelling and the impact of
media on sports culture.
Through these events, Pathways for Kids has continued its mission to
inspire and prepare the next generation for success in diverse careers,
reinforcing the importance of education, self-confidence, and ambition. THE PATHFINDER - FALL/WINTER ISSUE 2024

Memoir from the the ‘24 Annual Gala
BY NATE NGEREBARA, PRESIDENTBeing here tonight—sharing this evening with you all—is a profound honor.
Looking around, I am inspired and hopeful. I am inspired by the diversity of
people who have the dreams and aspirations of the resource-challenged youths
of San Francisco front and center; I am inspired by your continued commitment
to this cause; and mostly I am inspired by the vigor and strength of this
community...
26 years ago, a charming, and talented Peter Dwares had the vision to call on
his social and professional network to pull their time, resources, and effort to
give back to the less fortunate youth in SF. This work involved talking to the
kids, instead of at them. Interacting with them on a human level, and mentoring
and guiding them to opportunities through mentorship. That kernel of his vision,
some 26 years ago, has led us to today – gathered here tonight is an
impressive group of leaders. Folks from all walks of life – captains of industry,
local leaders, and even doctors. Your presence here signifies your continued
commitment to fostering that vision, and making it more of a reality.
We have an array of activities: a silent auction featuring incredible items, a
live-auction with trips and adventures of a lifetime. Each moment is a reminder
of the impact we can make when we come together. At the heart of our
gathering tonight lies the African philosophy of Ubuntu: "I am because we are."
This simple word emphasizes our interconnectedness and the idea that our
individual well-being is tied to the well-being of others. It reminds us that when
we uplift one child, we uplift our entire community. This spirit of Ubuntu is what
drives our mission at Pathways for Kids—to ensure that every child has access
to the tools they need to succeed. Some of those children are here tonight:
Jurmiah Edwards; Kayden Duckett; Tollie Jones; Latoya Love; Charnice
Woodson; and Marlin Burns.
Also present are program Managers at the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House:
Albert and Sharon Johnson. The Nabe serves to strengthen community life and
individual well-being among Potrero Hill and southeast San Francisco residents.
I cannot stress enough the value of the good work these folks do. Thanks for
being here tonight.
We are here because we believe in the potential of every child. We believe
that with the right support—mentorship, education, and resources—our youth
can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness. The mission at Pathways for
Kids is to provide these essential tools and tonight’s gala is crucial in helping us
continue this vital work...
Tonight, faced with a choice between caring and indifference, you all have
chosen to care! You have chosen to do your part in ensuring that we leave a
mark on the lives of a young kid. So, in that spirit of caring and Ubuntu as we
celebrate and connect — I encourage you to open your hearts... THE PATHFINDER - FALL/WINTER ISSUE 2024

Peter's Corner
WORDS FROM PETER DWARES, FOUNDER2024 has been our best year in ten years because of the hard work put in by our Program
Director Ricky Griffith and Vice President Mike Montalban. And with new President Nate
Ngerabara, 2025 will be even better. We have and are bringing in stock brokers, real estate
contractors, plumbers, real estate investors, doctors, architects and others to speak to
young, at-risk people. We would also like to express our sincere thanks to the Potrero Hill
Neightborhood House for their continued partnership and collaborative vision. Their
dedication to serving the community has been invaluable.
Finally, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to our generous donors and volunteers whose
contributions have made our work possible. Your support is essential to our mission of
providing a brighter future for San Francisco's youth. In celebrating our 26th anniversary,
we invite you to join us in recommitting to our mission. Together, we can invest in the
youth and create a more equitable and prosperous future for all.
Thank you for your continued support. We couldn't do this work without you.

For the past 26 years, Pathways for Kids has
brought together our best dressed coupled
with an innovative theme to celebrate our
year’s accomplishments in giving to the kids
of San Francisco.
This year’s turnout was nothing short of
spectacular as the biggest hearts and
deepest pockets bid on vacations, wine and
restaurant packages, and of course, unique
items from the silent auction.
Thank you to all our supporters, donors,
staff and guests for another great year at the
Mark Hopkins atop Nob Hill. Whether you
channeled Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Durante,
or Frank Sinatra himself, the classics would
have been proud with the level of effort each
guest put into their outfits (and auction
participation) to commemorate the ‘Crooner
Age’ this year at ‘Sinatra & Friends’.
