Tackling the Behemoth
MIKE MONTALBAN
EXECUTIVE DIRECTORPFK Mentor Nate Ngerabara promised the Potrero Hill Neighborhood House a party as
a reward for their meaningful engagement
In this season’s newsletter, it’s about figuring out what to fight for and
investing in resources that help our kids tackle life’s big issues.
Whether you’re a new or advanced adult reading this, we all remember
a goal-oriented struggle that seemed impossible to overcome...at least
initially. If only there was more money or maybe if that parent had
shown up. Maybe if someone believed in us, saw our inherent genius
early and invested some time, how different could it have been?
For over 25 years, Pathways for Kids has strived to open the door to
this answer and be the catalyst to help kids choose their highest path.
These challenges, whether due to environmental, resource, or
motivational factors, are no doubt exacerbated in an ever-tightening
economic environment for today’s city kids. For San Francisco teens
trying to figure out how they’re going to navigate purpose only a few
years from adulthood, that spark can’t come soon enough. And beyond
financial help alone, Pathways for Kids emphasizes supplementing
mentorship as the voice of reason and practicality to help kids
creatively control life’s controllables, early.

PFK Team Highlight WELCOMING RICKY, OUR NEW PROGRAM DIRECTOR Meet Ricky Griffith, a dynamic individual who has traversed from the
bustling streets of Los Angeles to the vibrant cityscape of San Francisco.
With a solid educational foundation in Sociology from CSUN, Ricky
embarked on a journey driven by a passion for social welfare.
Currently serving as a social worker and program director for Pathways for
Kids, Ricky is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of children
and families. Through his work, he strives to create pathways to success for
underprivileged youth, providing them with the support and resources they
need to thrive.
But Ricky doesn't stop there. Inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit of those
around him at Pathways for Kids, he has ventured into new territory by
launching a car rental business. By surrounding himself with like-minded
individuals and seizing opportunities for innovation, he is not only driving
change in the social sector but also exploring new avenues for growth and
success.
Driven by a desire to create meaningful change and empower others, Ricky
exemplifies the spirit of resilience, determination, and entrepreneurship.
Whether it's through his work as a social worker or his entrepreneurial
endeavors, he continues to make a lasting impact on his community and
beyond. 98% of Pathways For
Kids surveyed would

IMPACT 2024
*2024 SURVEYS THE PATHFINDER - SPRING/SUMMER ISSUE 2024
PAGE 02In 2o24, too often have our kids been conditioned by social narratives
to ‘pick the oppressor’ to blame for life’s circumstances or that quick
money alone can buy one’s way out of a turbulent upbringing. PFK
operates on a deeper philosophy that our biggest oppresor isn’t
external, but rather our own self-talk. That the blank check isn’t the
answer, but find out how to become the check writer yourself. Our
program encourages kids to ask themselves, “how do I get the skills to
get that job to build that life, open that bank account, make those
investments, and make the money work for me?”
Our north star has always been to prepare our students for the ebbs
and flows of finance, politics, and technology by bringing them back
to the true meaning of essential skill acquisition in order to build an
independent life. More than ever, we must lean into our community
and continue to show shining examples of mentorship, philanthropy,
and love. And that before entitlement and recognition, the merit and
discipline and wisdom that precedes it is what keeps money flowing.
Your support as a donor, mentor, volunteer or friend means so much
to us. Help us bring back the narrative of hard work and learning as
the single most important reason we can tackle the behemoth of our
own mental obstacles.

Dynamic Collaboration at
Potrero Hill Neighborhood House
BY RICKY GRIFFITHPathways for Kids, renowned for its dedication to
empowering youth through educational initiatives,
has forged a transformative partnership with Potrero
Hill Neighborhood House, enriching the lives of
children in the community. This dynamic
collaboration has paved the way for a series of
engaging events aimed at broadening horizons and
fostering a spirit of exploration among young
participants.
One of the hallmark features of this partnership has
been the introduction of diverse speakers from
various professional fields, providing invaluable
insights and inspiration to eager young minds.
Among the distinguished speakers invited by
Pathways for Kids were experts in patient litigation,
real estate brokerage, and construction. Each offering
unique perspectives and expertise to the participants.
Nate Ngerabara from Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP,
kicked things off by speaking about patient litigation.
Nate educated the kids on the importance of
advocacy and legal rights in the healthcare domain,
semiconductors, consumer electronics, and software.
Through thought-provoking discussions, participants
gained an understanding of the complexities
surrounding patient rights and the legal avenues
available to address grievances. THE PATHFINDER - SPRING/SUMMER ISSUE 2024

Real Investment into a Lucrative Future
BY RICKY GRIFFITHThe Potrero Hill partnership also facilitated interactions
with professionals in real estate brokerage. Mark Mason,
Senior Vice President of Investments at Marcus &
Millichap, offered participants a glimpse into the world of
property management and investment. Mark discussed the
importance of helping clients navigate the complexities of
the real estate market and achieve their buying, selling, or
investment objectives. From exploring market trends to
understanding negotiation strategies, these sessions
equip participants with valuable knowledge about the
intricacies of the real estate industry.
In addition, speakers from the construction and
contracting sector provided insights into the dynamic
field of infrastructure development and project
management. Michael Fisher and Terry Irwin from Irwin
Fisher Inc. spoke about the vital role of construction in
shaping communities. Mike and Terry then advocated for
considering trades as a viable and rewarding career path,
encouraging kids to explore hands-on skills and
apprenticeships as avenues to fulfilling and lucrative
futures.
Through these engaging sessions, Pathways for Kids and
Potrero Hill Neighborhood House have fostered a culture
of learning and exploration, inspiring young participants
to pursue their passions and explore diverse career paths.
By bringing together professionals from various fields,
this partnership has created a platform for mentorship
and knowledge exchange, empowering youth to envision
a future filled with possibilities.
As the collaboration between Pathways for Kids and
Potrero Hill Neighborhood House continues to flourish, it
serves as a testament to the transformative power of
community.partnerships in nurturing the potential of
young individuals and fostering a brighter future for
generations to come. THE PATHFINDER - SPRING/SUMMER ISSUE 2024

WORDS FROM PETER DWARESI couldn’t be more pleased with the work we’ve done in 2024. Thank you
to Ricky, Grace, Mike, our donors, mentors and volunteers for their
enduring efforts.
While we teach our kids that merit and hard work are the highest path
to self-awareness and independence, we also hold ourselves at
Pathways for Kids also to our own high standards to represent San
Francisco’s finest professions. Whether in law, real estate or, vocational
(construction, plumbing or electrical, etc...), our programs aim to show
that these places of work are accessible and needed.
Let us continue the journey and build the greatest generation we’ve
seen yet.
