PATTERNS OF
EVOLUTION
By: San Juan and Advincula A.

WHAT IS
MICROEVOLUTION?
This happens when the
frequencies of alleles in a group
undergo changes.

WHAT IS
NATURAL SELECTION?
It is a process wherein different enviornmental
pressures lead to different ways of survival and
reproduction
Natural selection is the engine that drives evolution.

PATTERNS OF NATURAL
SELECTION
Directional Selection - caused by
the change in the condition of the
enviornment
Disruptive Selection - extreme
forms of traits are favored more
than others.
01
03
Stabalizing Selection - middle
form of a trait is chosen and the
extreme forms are eliminated.

GENE POOL

MUTATION & GENE FLOW
Mutation is present
when there is a
change in the DNA
of an organism,
resulting in the
formation of a new
allele
Gene Flow is the
movement of alleles
in a group of
organism. It is also an
another agent of
microevolution

HARDY-
WEINBERG
EQUILIBRIUM
The frequency of alleles in a gene
pool will remain constant unless one
or more factors or other agents will
cause the frequency to change.
There are different conditions that
must be met:
The organisms must be
isolated. There should be
no movement into or out
of the population
1.
There should be no
mutation that will happen
in the gene pool
2.
3. Mating from the population
must be random.
4. There is no natural selection. All
organisms can reproduce.

WHAT IS
MACROEVOLUTION?
This refers to the large-scale
changes that lead to an
evolution of organisms from
simple to complex.
The geologic-time scale shows
how macroevolution happens for
a long period of time. It is shown
on page 251-253

MASS EXTINCTION
This is a result of various factors; these
factors all lead to the disappearance of a
vast number of organisms

WHAT IS ADAPTATION?
Adaptation happens when organisms are able to
survive and spread to different places because
they were able to adapt to the changes.

TRY TO LIST THE ADAPTATIONS OF:
NAME THE
ADAPTATIONS
Adaptations are the features
that help an organism survive
in its habitat.
(1) a camel (2) a sunflower

ADAPTIVE RADIATION
refers to the evolution of organisms into
several new ones that are living differently
from the original population or group

DIVERGENT RADIATION
This happens when two isolated populations
evolve separately. An Isolated population is a
population that can no longer interbreed with
the original population. Speciation is a process
where a new species will be created.

CONVERGENT
EVOLUTION
This happens when unrelated organisms seem to
look like each other. The resulting similarity among
organisms is called analogy.

WHAT IS COEVOLUTION?
This happens when two different interacting
organisms evolve jointly due to the changes in
each other.
