Knowing
the self
Paul Churchland

Paul Montgomery Churhland
was born on October 21,
1942 in Vancouver, Canada.
Who is paul churchland?

Who is paul churchland?
Is a Canadian Philosopher
focusing on the Philosophy of
Mind.

Who is paul churchland?
Churchland is a major
proponent of ELIMINATIVE
MATERIALSM.

Physical Brain
Dualism
Throughout history, numerous Western philosophers have
adhered to the theory of dualism. In the context of human
existence, dualism posits that the mind and body are distinct
entities.
Mind

DUalism
HUMAN BRAIN
The brain is really just an organ similar to the
heart and lungs

DUalism
Asserted the mind is the seat of our
consciousness
it's whatgives us or identity
We can't see it, taste it, our touch it, but it
does exist
MIND

DUalism

Rather than dualism, Churchland holds to
materialism, the belief that nothing but matter
exists. When discussing the mind, this means
that the physical brain, and not the mind,
exists. Adding to this, the physical brain is
where we get our sense of self.

Churchland adheres to materialism, the belief
that nothing but matter exists. In other words,
if it can't somehow be recognized by the senses
then it's akin to a fairy tale.
Applying this engagement to the mind,
Churchland asserts that since the mind can't be
experienced by our senses, then the mind
doesn't really exist.

Famously known as ELIMINATIVISM

Eliminative materialism
Stated simply, eliminative materialism argues that
the ordinary folk psychology of the mind is wrong.
IMAGINARY MIND
PHYSICAL BRAIN

Folk psychology
Refers to our capacity to explain and
predict other's behaviours.
Our understanding of beliefs,fears, and
other mental states stems from the role
play in folk psychological explanations of
behaviour

eliminative
materialism
'''We do have as organ for
understanding and recognizing
moral facts. It is called the
brain''.
-Paul Churchland

Examples:
Atheism is eliminativist about
God and other supernatural
entities; all forms of
materialism are eliminativist
about the soul; modern
chemist are eliminativist about
phlogiston; and modern
physicists are eliminativist
about the existence of either.

Examples:
Mental processes in such as
remembering, learning, finding
something funny, feeling hungry,
feeling dizzy - these states of the
physical Brain itself. So materialism
really is the idea that all of what we
think of as the mind is something
that the brain does.

Examples:
If we ask ''why am I feeling sad?'', a
materialist can point to the
neurochemical changes in our brain.
On the other hand, a dualist's
responses to the question it ''well it's
just what you are, that's just how the
mind works''.

HOw is the
theory
relevant in
today's
time??
