PE and Health 4 Quarter 1 – Week 4 To promote personal wellness for active and healthy living. 1. Recognize the health appraisal or assessment processes, including height and weight measurement (BMI calculation), hearing assessment, vision screening, scoliosis examination, health inspection (skin, hair, and nails), and dental check-up. 2. Perform health appraisal or assessment protocols encompassing procedures such as measuring height and weight (calculating BMI), administering hearing assessments, conducting vision screenings, executing scoliosis tests, performing health examinations involving the assessment of skin, hair, and nails, and carrying out dental evaluations.

Activity 1: Picture / Puzzle Analysis The teacher calls 3 learners to form the 3 puzzles. Let learners analyze the pictures through the guide questions. After the pictures were formed, guided questions will be asked. Directions: Look at the pictures formed by your classmates. Let us analyze each of them.

1. What can you see in the pictures? 2. Who are these people? 3. Where do we usually see them? 4. Do you see them regularly? 5. Why is it important to see them regularly? (Values of self-care will be integrated)

Introduces the following important words for the learners so that they will be able to understand what the lesson is about. A Health appraisal is an evaluation of an individual’s health done to gather information on current bodily fitness and risk of developing various medical conditions. Scoliosis is a situation where the spine curves sideways. Checklist is a list of items, things, or tasks that need to be done. It asks for information.

Activity 2: Guess What’s Inside! Directions: Guess the word that is being described in each circle. Dental ……………. beautiful smile Height/weight….. tall/ heavy Ears………………. loud/soft Vision ………..……. it twinkles Health……………….. it is my wealth Note: The center oval will be the last one to be opened.

Health Appraisal or Assessment Procedures • Do you know these words? • What are the Health Appraisal Procedures? • Do you know how to conduct Appraisal Procedures? • Have you experienced any health appraisal procedures?

This lesson can be presented using PowerPoint presentations or Teacher Discussion. The teacher will show the different health appraisal procedures and how to conduct it. Health appraisal procedures are means of assessing a person. This includes the screening of his height and weight and other parts of the body.

• Make sure legs are straight, arms are at sides, and shoulders are level. • Make sure the child is looking straight ahead and that the line of sight is parallel with the floor. • Take the measurement while the child stands with the head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels touching the flat surface (wall).

• Use a weighing scale. • Have the child or teen remove shoes and heavy clothing, such as sweaters. • Have the child or teen stand with both feet in the center of the scale. • Write down the weight, rounding to the nearest decimal fraction (22. 5 kilograms).

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a medical screening tool that analyzes height and weight to determine the amount of fat in the body.

A hearing test is performed with a ballpen click test. BALL PEN CLICK TEST - is the use of a movable ballpen placed one inch away from the ear. Block the other ear with a finger, and press the button of the ballpen down to release it. Do it only once. The child either raises a hand or acknowledges it with a yes or a nod that he or she heard the click.

• Ensure that both of your eyes remain uncovered. • You'll be requested to use your palm, a piece of paper, or a small paddle to cover one eye while you say the smallest line of letters from the chart that you can perceive. • For those who are unable to read, such as children, numbers, lines, or images are used. Having 20/20 vision is considered typical. • A measurement of 20/40 suggests that the line you can accurately read from a distance of 20 feet (6 meters) can be read by a person with standard vision from 40 feet (12 meters) away.

Scoliosis is a condition in which the spine curves to the side. It involves an atypical sideways curvature of the spine. This issue typically arises when the growth spurt of adolescents is unexpectedly interrupted. It tends to impact girls more frequently. Early treatment before the bones reach full development can lead to the correction of this condition.

The following are signs of scoliosis: • One shoulder blade is more noticeable than the other. • The head is not centered with the pelvis. • One hip seems elevated or stands out more than the other. • The rib cage displays asymmetry. • The waist appears uneven. • The entire body inclines toward a single side.

A. SKIN (by looking at the skin/hair/nail) Clear skin is a sign of healthy skin. B. HAIR Signs that your hair is healthy, even if it doesn't feel like it. • Your hair feels great after a modest haircut. • Your hair looks shiny. • You lose a bit of hair when you shampoo or brush. • Your hair doesn't tangle easily. • It's growing, even if it's not growing super quickly. • The ends are typically healthy.

C. NAIL Irregularities in fingernails included: • Discoloration such as dark or white streaks, or alterations in nail color. • Alterations in nail shape like curling or clubbing.

Examine the teeth, gums, and mouth. • Healthy teeth with no tooth decay. Again, what are the health appraisal procedures?

Activity 3: “SIMULTANEOUS PAIR WORK” Directions: Divide the class into 5 groups. Each group will have a leader. Each group will be assigned to a different area/post based on the procedures to be conducted. 1. The group will work in pairs. 2. The groups will work simultaneously. 3. They must pass all the posts in order to finish the Health Appraisal Procedures. 4. Give the groups 5 minutes to perform. Encourage them to work silently. 5. List all the data needed in the checklist. 6. Once the groups are done in all posts the checklist will be submitted to the group leader. The flow chart will be the guide.

Present and explain the different parts of the checklist. Directions: Get a copy of the checklist and fill it out. There are parts that only require you to check the appropriate box for your answer.

Guide to Accomplishing the Checklist: 1. Are the needed information in the checklist listed? 2. Compute the BMI. 3. Follow the procedures given. 4. All posts must be passed by the learners. 5. Boxes must be properly checked for each kind of testing.

Work collaboration and responsibility are observed by the learners. Ask Questions such as: 1. How did you work within the group? 2. What are the different health appraisal /assessment procedures? 3. Among the tests, which do you think you found difficult to perform? Why?

Directions: Answer the following questions: 1. What are the different health appraisals/ assessment procedures? 2. How did we conduct the health appraisals/ assessment procedures? 3. How do you find conducting health appraisal procedures? 4. Is there any importance/ relevance in conducting the health appraisal procedures? 5. Why do we need to conduct it regularly? Regularly conducting Health Appraisal Procedures is crucial for promptly identifying any health issues in an individual.
