•PelitaIlmuFoundation (YPI)was established on Dec 04, 1989. The
purpose was to improve public education and health.
•Its main activities are on AIDS counseling, prevention, care, and

•Currently, YPI covers 10 provinces in Indonesia, with focus on AIDS
counselingand prevention.

•In 1996, YPI bought a piece of land of around 2 hectares in Putat
Nutugvillage, Ciseeng. In the beginning, the land was allocated as a
shelter for people living with HIV (PLHIV). However, it was altered
when ART was discovered in 1997. There was no need to provide the
shelter any longer
•In 2002, “PelitaDesa” was established; an institution under the wing
of YPI, which task is to develop villages by developing the potential
of the village youth.

•In 1996, YPI conducted a life skill training for
youth for about one month.
•Life skills are the skills that are necessary to make

•The materials covered: formulating ideas,
communication skills, seeing opportunities,
management of money, time, and space, and
teamwork skills.
•To manage the abandoned land in Ciseeng, Parung, YPI
offered the alumni of the training for it. AdiSetiadi, one
of the alumni, accepted the offer.

•When he accepted the offer to
develop the land, Adihad just
graduated from senior high school;
he was just 18 years old.
•He went to Ciseengwithout
any physical nor financial any physical nor financial
support from YPI.
•YPIonly built a small praying room in
the middle of tall grass and pond, of
which local people could work on.
•How could a 19-year-old teenager
ably managed developing an
abandoned land, which is now
became an outbound center?

one of the tourist attractions favoured by
schools around Jakarta and Bogor as
study tour destination.

•He lived alone and approached the
local youth.

daily foods.

congregation to renovate the masjidwith the
proceeds from utilizing the ponds as fish
farming. All the proceeds went to build the
masjid.
•It was accepted by the locals, whom asked the
farmers who used to use the ponds as paddy fields
Difficult Times

were used to buy cements and bricks. The locals
helped by providing force, sand, and stone. At that
time Cisadaneriver was used for sand and rock
mining by the locals.
•With his success in building a masjid, Adiplaced
himself in the heart of the locals.
•Nonetheless,otherworkstobringincomefrom
fishingandoutboundforuniversitystudentswere
fruitless.

•In 2002, small business training was
conducted at DharmaisHospital.
•Participants: 30 small entrepreneurs.
•AdiSetiaditook part by presenting the outbound
center, its development and the challenges faced.
•One participants was a coordinator for all

kindergartens in The Greater Jakarta area.She
felt that the concept fitted kindergarten
students. Very interested with the concept, she
visited the center. Afterward, she encouraged all
kindergarten schools in the area to visit Pelita
Desa’sOutbound Center, Ciseeng.

became well-known as centerfor
kindergarten and elementary students.
Even though, there were high school and
university students came to the center.

•PelitaDesahas no budget to
maintain the whole centerwhich
covers an area of 2 hectares. To

reach 500 people/day.

around 300 families of PutatNutugvillage.

•The profits are used to support YPI’s
monthly activities.
•Training for village youth in:Medan,
Padang,Pangandaran,Pandeglang,
Tomohon,Kendari,Wonosobo,Cirebon,
Sumbawa,etc.There are 30 villages from
all over Indonesia that have sent their
youth to participate in the training.

•How has the training been conducted?
Youth from villages all over Indonesia
stayed for a month in PelitaDesa, wherein
they participated in training and in
internship program. Once the training is
over, the youth would return to their
villages to implement their new
knowledge.

ThailandandJapan.

•Due to COVID 19 Pandemic, outbound activities had to stop for about two and a
half years.
•During that time, PelitaDesastill had to expense money to maintain its facilities
which cost around 50 millions/month.
•PelitaDesaalso continued to provide financial assistance to villagers who had no income
due to the pandemic.
•PelitaDesa’sfunds were finally depleted; it also had quite a large of debts.
•Adiand his team had to shifted their activities to exporting ornamental fish and plants.
•It was a small-scaled export of USD 300 –5,000 Eksporberskalakecilsekitar300-5000for
one shipment; we shipped the cargos quite frequently. Although the profits from

developed.

supportthevillageyouthbyprovidinginitial
capitaltothosewhoarenotyetindependent.
