Percents Less Than 1% Be careful with percents less than 1%. Handle them the same way (move exactly 2 places). Example : 0.3% = 0.003 By Jim Olsen, W.I.U. #P20

Recall: To change a percent to a decimal, move the decimal point two places to the left (because percent means divided by 100 ) Change each to a decimal: .1% .08% 0.24%

Recall: To change a percent to a fraction, change to a decimal and then read it to make it a fraction. Change each to a fraction: .1% .08% 0.24%

Examples: If the price of a share of RST stock started the day at $53.20 and went up $0.13, what is the percent increase? If the human body had 10 pints of blood and .08% of the blood is alcohol (the legal level of intoxication), how much alcohol is in the blood? If Joseph has $2,000,000 invested and 0.5% is invested in Dell Computers, how much is invested in Dell Computers?

Closing Notes  Remember  Handle percents less than 1% the same way as ‘bigger’ percents. Move the decimal point two places . #P20
