PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT LESSON 1: KNOWING ONESELF

DO YOU KNOW YOURSELF ? Lets have a short activity: Complete Twenty Statement Survey. Write down the statements that come to your mind upon hearing the phrase “I am” .

TRAITS A collection of traits makes up one personality.

PERSONALITY came from the Greek word persona – which means mask.

PERSONALITY It refer to one’s public face, or the self one usually shows to other people.

Bigger Self Sometimes referred to as one’s essence. It hold many more resources that the personality or self can claim and actualize for its well- being.

Self Encompasses one’s body, feelings, emotions, thoughts, values and relationships. It is a unique personal identity made up of ones experiences, beliefs, convictions, as well as one’s longings, dreams, life purpose, and meaning.

PERSONALITY Refers to how an individual distinctly thinks and behaves in different situations and is relatively stable across time.

Determining Personality Traits GORDON ALPORT – psychologist who espoused the uniqueness of each individual. He identified around 200 traits.

Determining Personality Traits RAYMOND CATELL – proposed that personality is made up of 16 basic dimensions.

CATELL’S PERSON ALITY TRAIT THEORY

Determining Personality Traits ROBERT McCRAE and Paul Costa (1992)– narrowed down the 16 basic personality traits into 5 categories which they called the BIG FIVE.

Five- Factor Trait Theory

PERSONALITY TYPE It is a unique collection of personality traits that tend to go together and characterize an individual.

Myers- Briggs Type Indicator Extraversion or Introversion – whether the person is energized by being surrounded by people or by being in solitude. Sensing or Intuition – whether the individual prefers to use his/her senses or ideas in interpreting information.

Myers- Briggs Type Indicator Thinking or Feeling – whether the person tends to think or feel when making decisions. Judgement or Perception – whether the person deals with situations by planning or spontaneity.
