Topic : PERISTALSIS Dra. Mónica Delgado Castillo

Peristalsis is a series of organized muscle contractions that occur throughout the digestive tract. Peristalsis is also seen in the tubular organs that connect the kidneys to the bladder.

Peristalsis is a series of wave-like muscle contractions that moves food to different processing stations in the digestive tract. The process of peristalsis begins in the esophagus when a bolus of food is swallowed .

The strong wave-like motions of the smooth muscle in the esophagus carry the food to the stomach, where it is churned into a liquid mixture called chyme . Next, peristalsis continues in the small intestine where it mixes and shifts the chyme back and forth, allowing nutrients to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the small intestine walls. Peristalsis concludes in the large intestine where water from the undigested food material is absorbed into the bloodstream.

ADVENTAGE Peristalsis is a normal function of the body . It is an automatic and important process that moves food through the digestive system. It also moves urine from the kidneys into the bladder, and bile from the gallbladder into the duodenum .

DISAVENTAGE Slow peristalsis causes constipation . the absence of peristalsis causes many changes as:  deficiency in swallowing food alterations in normal urination

MEDICAL There are medications that increase peristalsis as:  neostigmine that can be used in selected patients to help ileus paralytic. O thers drugs decreased peristalsis as Propantheline bromide There are diseases that cause decreased peristalsis as: paralytic ileus , achalasia , dysphagia while, There are agents stimulates peristalsis such as bacteria

Issue in Ecuador I n Ecuador the most common disorder of the peristalis is constipation. Its prevalence affects 20 percent of the population, says the society of gastroenterology Ecuador
