Long Obedience

I was glad I was wrong
•That our existence does not end at death
•That happiness is not found in material
things (Ecclesiastes 5:10)
•Matthew 6:25 “Is not the life more than
food, and the body more than clothing?”
•There is a meaning and purpose for my
life
•God loves me (John 3:16)

Nothing to do?
“An excellent way to test people’s values is
to observe what we do when we don’t
have to do anything. How we spend our
leisure time, how we spend our extra
money”

“I don’t feel like it?”
•Feelings are great liars (Proverbs 16:25)
•The hero does the right thing even though
he feels afraid
•“The Bible wastes very little time on the
way we feel”
•Good feelings are the by-product of doing
the right thing
•Embrace the unexpected (James 1:2-4)

“Is Worship Worth It?”
•But worship isn’t some ritual
•What are we trying to accomplish
(Ephesians 4:11-13)
•Colossians 1:28 “So that we may present
every man complete in Christ”
•Are we prepared for the next stage in our
lives (2 Timothy 2:21)

We have a dangerous job
•Galatians 6:1 “So that you too will not be
tempted”
•Jude 22-23 “And have mercy on some,
who are doubting, save others, snatching
them out of the fire; and on some have
mercy with fear”

“Every day I put faith on the line—I persist
in making the center of my life a God
whom no eye hath seen. Every day I put
hope on the line. I do not know what the
next hour will hold. Before this day is
over I may have to deal with death, pain,
loss, and rejection. Every day I put love
on the line”

As we interact with people
•Remember they are accustomed of being
lied to
•They will be tempted to think that the
gospel is just one more example of false
advertising and hype

The Honesty of the Bible
It contains every skeptical thought, every
disappointing venture, every pain, every
despair that we can face. Good poetry (as
in the Psalms) survives not when it is
pretty or beautiful or nice but when it is
true: accurate and honest

Evil is Temporary
•God will bring it to an end (Matthew
25:46)
•The “worst does not last”. Nothing
counter to God’s justice has any eternity to
it
•No temptation or trial is everlasting
•Everything is lost or won in the moment
(Genesis 39)
