Stem borer:  Sahyadrassus malabaricus Hepialidae , Lepidoptera S tem borer infests the main stem of young trees at the basal region. The larva of the pest girdles the stem and bores downward into it. The girdled portion and bore-hole is covered with a mat- like frass material. The infested trees wilt

Management Spray quinalphos 0.1% around the bore-hole and inject the same into the bore-hole after removing the frass . Keep the basins free of weed

Black Scale:  Saissetia nigra ( Coccidae,Hemiptera ) Female adults are elliptical, flattened and shiny black Green scale - Lecanium sp ( Coccidae , Hemiptera ) Flat soft scales Feeds on leaves and tender shoots

Symptoms of damage: It infests tender leaves, shoots and twigs by sucking sap. Sooty mould fungus is observed on leaves due to honey dew secretio n

Masked scale:  Mycetaspis personata Diaspididae , Hemiptera Dome shaped and greyish brown scale will be seen on the under surface of leaves, petioles, shoots especially of young clove plants. Symptoms of damage: The infested leaves become discoloured and completely yellowish and finally may fall down.

Management Removal of affected leaves and branches will prevent the spread Spray dimethoate 30 EC (0.03%)

Thrips Scirtothrips dorsalis : Thripidae Nymph and adults lacerate the leaf tissues and suck oozing sap Affected leaves show pinkish discolouration , crinkled, curled upward & shed Flower shedding is also noticed, plants gets stunted & bronzed

Management Collect and destroy all infested parts Spray dimethoate 30EC at 0.03%
