1. PHARMACOGNOSY OF DATURA BY:- PRITY PRIYA UNDERGRADUTED COURSE AKU ,PATNA

2. Synonyms :- Devil’s Trumpet ,Locoweed, Stink Weed, Moon Flower Biological sources :- Datura herb consists of the dried leaves and flowering tops of Datura metel Linn and Datura metel var. fastuosa Family :- Solanaceae

3. Geographical sources :- It is found in India, England and other tropical and sub-tropical countries . Morphology :- Appearance – Occurs as leaves (which are toxic ), flower and fruits shape :- ovate, triangular Size :- 6-25cm long and 7-15cm wide Surface :-Glabrous Apex :- Acute Base :- Asymmetrical Margin :- Usually angular, rarely entire Colour :- Greyish green

Odour :- Characteristics Taste :- Bitter Fruit :- Capsule covered with spines Flower :- Large , axillary having short curved pedicel ,white ,funnel shaped corolla containing five stamens ,ovary bicarpellary , calyx tubular with five ,triangular , acuminate ,marginal teeth Microscopy :- Transverse section shows a bifacial structure . In the lamina it has the upper epidermis which is single layer , rectangular cells covered with cuticle Both covering and glandular trichomes are present

5. The covering trichomes are uniseriate, multicellular , warty and with blunt apex. The glandular trichomes have one stalk consisting of one cell and multicellular head . The mesophyll has spongy parenchyma and palisade parenchyma in it . In the midrib ,strips of collenchyma appear below the upper and above the lower epidermis followed by the cortical parenchymatous cells containing calcium oxalate.

6. Chemical Constituents :- Datura herb contains up to 0.5 %of total alkaloids ,among which hyoscine (scopolamine) is the main alkaloids ,while 1-hyoscyamine (scopoline) and atropine are present in very less quantities . Chemical Test :- Vitali-Morin Test – The tropane alkaloids is treated with fuming nitric acid ,followed by evaporation to dryness and addition of methanolic potassium hydroxide solution to an acetone solution of nitrated residue .Violet colouration takes places due to tropane derivative .

7. On addition of silver nitrate solution to solution of hyoscine hydrobromide ,yellowish white ppt is formed ,which soluble in dilute ammonia, but not soluble in nitric acid . Uses :- It is used to cure cough ,asthma and bronchitis. Used as anti-spasmodic and CNS depressant . Datura is the source of hyoscine and used as parasympholytic . It is used in cerebral excitement The Rajpoot mother are said to smear their breasts with the juice of the D.metel leaves ,to poison their newly born female infants.

Market product :- It is one of the ingredients of the preparation known as Jatifaladi Bati ,Jatyadi tail (Baidyanath) and J.P.massaj oil , painkill oil , J.P.grace oil jamuna Pharma) Allied Drugs :- Datura stramonium/ D. wrightii Datura metel /Datura innoxia Datura kymatocarpa Adulterant :- D. stramonium is adulterated with tobacco ,tea leaves, chestnut leaves, and gum benzoin .
