Functions of PTC:
1. This committee should meet regularly at least six times in the year and also as and when
necessary.
2.Advisingmedical,administrative,andpharmacydepartmentsondrugrelatedissues.
3. Developing drug policies and procedures.
4.Evaluatingandselectingdrugsfortheformularyandprovidingforitsperiodicrevision.
5. Managing adverse drug reactions.
6. Managing medication error.

7. Criteria for inclusion of medicines on the formulary list (essential medicines list (EML))
8.Standardtreatmentguidelinesandtreatmentalgorithms,whichshouldbethebasisof
formularyselection
9. Generic substitution and therapeutic interchange
10. Information regarding new drugs which may have become commercially available.
11. Review of side effects, adverse drug reactions, toxic effects, drug interactions of drugs
12. Reports of various sub-committees.

PTC Role in Drug Safety:
➢Drugsafetyisthemoral,legalandprofessionalobligationofpharmacist.
➢Thereisaneedtocreatesafetyawarenessinallhospitaldepartments.
➢Followingguidelinesmaysubservethecommitteeinascertainingtheadequate
safetyfactorofhospitalpharmacy:
✓Thepharmacistshouldbeawareofnarcotic&psychotropicsubstances.
✓Thehospitalmustemployaqualified,atleast,aregisteredpharmacistwithatleastB.Pharma
degreeas‘ChiefPharmacist’.
✓Shouldnotpermitnon-pharmacistpersonneltodispensedrugsandalliedmaterials.
✓Mustprovideadequatesafe,workspace,andstoragefacilities.
✓Shouldhaveadrugformularywhichperiodicallyrevisedandkeptuptodate.
✓Thepoisonousmaterialsareseparatedfromnonpoisonousmaterialsinthepharmacy.
✓Notpermitnon-pharmacistpersonnel.

PTC Role in ADR’S:
➢Thereisaproportionateincreaseinthedrugreactions.Inordertogainan
understandingoftheseproblemsandtoformulatecompetentopinions,
preventionandtreatment,thePTCmustassumetheresponsibilityforthe
developingandinstitutingaprocedureforthepurposeofcommittee.

➢Everycaseofadversedrugreactionmustbefirstreportedbytheattending
physiciantothechairmanofthePTCorclinicalpharmacologist.
➢Theattendingphysicianshouldcompletethe‘AdverseDrugReactionReport
form’asillustratedabove,onanypatienthavingadversereaction.
➢Thesameisthenultimatelyrecordedinthemedicalrecords.
➢ThePTCinteractswiththevariousgovernmentbodieslike-DTAB(Drugs
TechnicalAdvisoryBoard),DCGI,AIIMS,PGI,Chandigarhforconsultation.
➢Themedicalrecordroomwill,uponthepatientsdischarge,removethisreport
fromthemedicalrecordandforwardittothechairman,whointurnperiodically
forwardessentialdatatothecentralcommitteeonAdverseReactionsformedby
theStateGovernmentorthedrugcontrolauthoritiesofthestate,Government
andtheDrugsControllerorconsultationswiththebodiesofexpertssuchas
DTAB.

Role of PTC in Emergency Drug List :
➢Emergencydrugsalwaysreadyforsevereconditioninhospitaldepartment
admittedpatients.
➢ItisabsolutelynecessaryforthePTCofahospitaltogetpreparedboxes
containingemergencydrugswhichshouldbealwaysavailablereadilyforuseat
thebed-side.
➢Listofsuchdrugsandothersuppliesshouldbecompliedbythecommittee,and
itshouldfindtheirplaceinemergencykits.
➢Theemergencyboxesalwayscontainsdifferentemergencydrugslike-digoxin,
amphetamine,atropine,WOI,amylnitriteetc.

Automatic Stop Order for Dangerous Drugs:
✓AllDrugOrdersfornarcotics,sedatives,hypnoticanticoagulants,and
antibioticsshallbeautomaticallydiscontinuedafter48hoursunlesstheorder
indicatesanexactnumberofdosestobeadministered,ortheattending
physician,re-ordersthemedication.
✓Allordersfornarcotics,sedativeandhypnoticsmustberewrittenevery24
hours.
✓InIndia,atpresent,thiskindofsystemofissuing“ASODD”isnotpracticed
exceptforhospitalslikeChristianMedicalHospitalVelloreorJaslokHospital,
